The Hidden Bar of Hammersmith

Hidden away in the basement of the Brook Green Hotel in Hammersmith is the contemporary cocktail bar Smith’s. We recently paid a visit and enjoyed a relaxed atmosphere, friendly and efficient service and of course, stunning cocktails. The bar décor was casually creative with bare bricks, simple artwork and toilet doors labelled with lips for girls and a moustache for the boys; no confusion there then! Another plus was the comfy booths which we discovered are bookable online – perfect for spontaneous group nights out. Smith’s offers a very extensive and exciting cocktail list. We started off with the Elderflower […]

Les Misérables – a triumph from stage to screen

If you haven’t already been make sure you go see Les Misérables before its cinema run is finished. It seems to be the marmite of films at the moment – with most critics praising it to the heavens and the small majority loathing it. Ignore the latter – it’s hard to not love Les Misérables. It’s not only worth it for Anne Hathaway’s infamous version of ‘I Dreamed A Dream’ which could – and indeed has – made grown men cry, but for other emotional numbers from Eddie Redmayne and Samantha Barks. Hugh Jackman is worthy of his Oscar nomination […]

Last night The Handbook went to a private screening of Quartet at Pinewood Studios, followed by a tour round Hedsor House, the beautiful Georgian country house that featured magnificently in the film. The glorious rooms were paired with delicious food from Melissa Webb and some delightful entertainment from Tenors Unlimited. The favourites of the Baby Boom Generation were all lined up in Dustin Hoffman’s directorial debut Quartet. The relationship between Dame Maggie Smith (The Harry Potter series) and Sir Tom Courtenay (Dr Zhivago) was the centre of the film; concentrating on their first meeting since their love affair 20 years ago. Britain’s Got Talent is Back

Another year, another series of Britain’s Got Talent where thousands of people come from far and wide to impress the judges Simon Cowell, Amanda Holden, Alesha Dixon and David Walliams. Auditions began last month in the Oval and controversy is already surrounding the popular TV show. Labrinth’s older brother, DJ and drummer Joshua McKenzie – known by his stage name MckNasty, auditioned in London which will no doubt cause hassle for Simon Cowell down the line as Labrinth is already signed to his label Syco, leading some to believe he may be given favourable treatment. Popular presenters Ant & Dec […]

Fornata on Kingly Street

Last night The Handbook visited Fornata on Kingly Street for some classic Italian food. If you are looking to have a three course meal in the usual, starter, main course, pudding order then this isn’t the place to come, Fornata is more informal and is all about bringing the food out in the order that it is ready, it does make it slightly awkward if one person’s dish is brought out first and the other is waiting or if two bowls of salad are sat on your table waiting for the main plates to arrive. But it is perfect if you […]

Gourmet burgers arrive in Cambridge

The burger may be regarded as the staple of fast food restaurants and late-night drunken feasts, but Byron are working hard to re-invent the burgers image. The restaurant, already with 25 venues across London, is starting to spread their ‘proper hamburgers’ ideology with a new opening in Cambridge. The launch in March will introduce the University City to gourmet patties made with quality Scottish beef, minced freshly every morning and served in a soft squishy bun. All burgers are delicious and of top quality – options include The Classic with Chilli (green chilli, chipotle mayo, shredded lettuce, American cheese) and […]
