Mock Duck Menu at Gilgamesh

As a teenager I spent many a weekend trawling the streets of Camden, donned in the latest studded belt ensemble but somehow in my intense search for for the next piece of Nightmare Before Christmas paraphernalia to add to my collection, I missed out on Gilgamesh. Luckily, as an adult, I’ve had the fortune of visiting the Pan-Asian restaurant, in a much less sombre outfit I may add. The reason for my overdue visit is the ‘Mock Duck’ menu which was created in honour of National Vegetarian Week 2014. The menu consists of Duck Spring Rolls, Duck and Watermelon Salad […]

The Imperial Durbar Opens

Been to Tooting Bec recently? No, well here’s a reason to go: The Imperial Durbar, an Indian coffee and cocktail bar, has just opened there. Brothers, Nicholas and Alastair Heathcote are behind the bar that gives customers a taste of 1940s India inspired by elements and innovations from Queen Victoria’s East India Company to Maharaja Bhupinder Singh’s reign. They hope to light a spark of nostalgia for anyone who has been to the  mystic Indian shores or dreams to, one day. Inside you’ll find a mix of old Indian furniture with coffees, traditional Indian teas and Chai being served, alongside […]

It’s All True, Patty & Bun: Review

Patty & Bun: believe the hype, believe it when your friend says ‘it is the best burger they’ve ever had’, believe it the press when it said they had thousands of people queuing to get their hands on a burger at the launch of their new site on Liverpool Street – because it’s all true. The new site offers both the chance to sit in and takeaway and sits daringly opposite one of the busiest Mcdonalds in the UK. The concept is simple, a more stripped back menu then their James Street sister but still serving up the classics including […]

Granger & Co Comes to Clerkenwell

After the success of the Notting Hill branch, Bill Granger is back with his second Granger & Co restaurant and this time he has chosen Clerkenwell to be the next home of his all-day eatery. The menu features a little bit of this and little bit of that, taking inspiration from right across the globe, which is why you’ll find dishes inspired by the cuisine of Hawaii, Sydney, Italy and Japan. But whilst the smorgasbord of dishes and ingredients may have different origins, what you will notice is that it is wonderfully healthy!   You’ll find cold-pressed juices,  salads including tea-smoked […]

City Barge

It’s not actually a barge, it’s a 14th century pub but don’t hold that against them. Especially when it boasts an outside space with a terrace, snug and deck chairs on the grass extending right down to a metre from the Thames towpath. The ‘Barge’ has just undergone an extensive refurb with a bar, dining room and open kitchen – all opening this Saturday retaining original Victorian panelling and three open fireplaces. There’s also a reclaimed Victorian bar and taxidermy birds. Oh yes and a metre-long Thames Barge – we got there in the end. Keep afloat with beers and […]

Paul A Young Chocolate Afternoon Tea

Saturday being gloriously hot, I went for a little amble through Hyde Park, around Shepherd’s Market and up Park Lane. Then seeing as the sun can be so draining, my friend and I dropped in at Grosvenor House Hotel, for a spot of afternoon tea, as you do. The Park Room at Grosvenor House is light and airy, we settled down in at a window table and nestled back into the green, plush chairs watching the world go by. A pianist tinkled in the corner, and not once, not twice but thrice did we sing Happy Birthday to various guests. […]

Cocktails at St James Bar: Review

When The Handbook heard that Sofitel St James had recently launched its spring/summer cocktail menu we knew that we just had to go and try it out. So on a Tuesday evening we escaped the bustle of Piccadilly, headed over to the hotel and took a seat in the decadent St James Bar. The bar draws inspiration from Coco Chanel’s 1920’s apartment, with a décor of Shagreen and kinon topped tables, dark hues, French antique gilt chairs and low sofas and dusky lighting. It’s intimate without being overbearing; quiet without it feeling awkward and at 7pm there was of mix […]
