James Middleton makes Nice Cakes

With pregnant Duchess of Cambridge dolls already on sale in the US and the Daily Telegraph inviting comparison of the Middleton sisters’ posteriors following K-Middy’s recent outing in rear-revealing black velvet Alexander McQueen, you might have missed the fact that baby bro James has soft launched his new online cake company, Nice Cakes. The name of the game is personalisation – sort of Moonpig cards that you can eat – and JM is purveying a gourmet gamut of cakes and cupcakes handmade  and decorated to order by high tech printers using  edible inks. You order online and choose either a […]

The Vest is History

As they say at this time of year, it’s out with the old and in with the new. Or not as the case may be. Come and watch what happens when consumerism eats itself at The Vest is History, an installation-meets-exhibition curated by MINT Vintage in its soon-to-be-new-store in Dalston. As a prelude to the launch of his new MINT Vintage, owner James Wright is calling on us to question the impact of technology and mass production with an homage to the string vest. Cross a threshold carpeted with pages torn from decommissioned books to witness what is (probably) the […]

Leon De Bruxelles

Renowned for its moules frites and hearty Flemish classics, Chez Léon, one of Belgium’s oldest and most famous restaurants is opening its first international outpost in London in the city’s Cambridge Circus. Entrepreneur Léon Vanlanker first opened Chez Léon back in 1893 near Brussels’ Grand Palace and to this day the company remains family owned and run. While nowadays it’s part of a nine-strong group in Belgium with 67 franchises in France, the original menu remains practically intact. The new London outpost seats 220 at marble tables draped in crisp black and white gingham. The interior represents a contemporary take […]

Game Birds at Corrigans

While we're all aware that the Glorious Twelfth marks the start of the game season, it takes a real aficionado to know that it's the first frosts that really get the pheasant, grouse and woodcock in flight. Frost. Check. So this week, we decided to see if Corrigan's of Mayfair had bagged themselves a winner… We went for the humorously titled Game Birds Menu (£25pp) where you get a choice of three plates out of a selection including Pressed heritage beetroot, Salad of teal, Nettle gnocchi (although admittedly this hasn't been shot) and Mallard and brown butter. Fave by far […]

London Printworks Fashion Cash

Having seen Victoria Beckham’s Facebook post that she’s donated some of her SS/12 VictoriaCat artwork to help save London Printworks I ventured round the corner from my flat in Brixton to meet executive director Lorna Dallas-Conte and to find out what LPW is all about. The Charity Trust launched some 20 years ago in response to the Brixton riots of that time and has just had its Arts Council Funding cut – pretty ironic given the rather more recent rioting in the area. The facility creates bespoke fabrics and samples for designers from Burberry to Louis Vuitton, works with schools, […]
