A to Z Hotel

An £85 per night sleep in Soho that doesn’t involve a cardboard box is now a reality with the launch of London’s first Z Hotel in Moor Street, a designer conversion of 12 Georgian townhouses gathered around a central courtyard. Each of the 85 rooms (infinitely bigger and more comfortable than that cardboard box) comes complete with en suite wet room, crisp linen on the beds, 40″ TVs and complimentary Wi-Fi and Sky (which does include Sports and Movie channels). There’s no over-priced room service but the Z café downstairs does a mean breakfast of smoked salmon bagels and organic […]

KIN

Clerkenwell’s Leather Lane may have a few similarities to the Khao San Road of Bangkok but today it’s getting another in new restaurant, KIN (meaning ‘eat’ in Thai), serving up street foods from across Asia. The genesis of the idea came after founder Kwok Tang discovered he had a gluten intolerance whereupon he and his wife and business partner began to investigate the benefits of Vietnamese cuisine which is gluten and wheat free. We’re talking a delicious mix of Pho, Chicken Katsu Curry, Pad Thai and Green Curry – most of which is also available to take away. Banh Mi, […]

We wish you a Lanvin Christmas

There’s nothing like the annual tradition of Claridge’s uber fashionable tree to tell us that the festive season is well and truly underway and although it was officially erected at the end of last month, it was properly christened this week with a star studded Christmas party. Guests including Sir Paul Smith, Gordon Ramsay, Tallulah Harlech, Mary Charteris, Emilia Fox, Fergus Henderson, Mike Figgis and, of course, Alber Elbaz downed pomegranate and mulled apple cocktails  and feasted upon parsnip and chestnut croquettes, turkey and ham pies and mini gingerbread houses while being serenaded by pianist Rosey Chan. The 20 foot […]

Karpo

Bond Street’s ladies who lunch at Fenwick’s fashionable Bond & Brook face a conundrum far greater than the Mulberry Tillie v the Carter (both, obviously) as the restaurant’s head chef, Daniel Taylor has upped sticks to King’s Cross upstart Karpo. The new venue, opening this month just opposite the main entrance of the station is seriously urban and the three-level space is all concrete-meets-wood-metalwork-and-leather alongside a series of dramatic specially commissioned graffiti from four internationally renowned artists with names like LX One and Remi Rough. Tricky. However, Tagliatelle with crab, chilli and mint or Venison shin with porcini and polenta […]

Christmas is lovely: everything is green, gold and red. This year, it’s also pink. Pink? I hear you shriek. Yes, pink … The Drunken Monkey in East London – renowned as much for its wondrous array of Dim Sum, as it is for its Kung Fu setting -is helping urn a few things on its head this Christmas. Stuart Semple for Amnesty at Boxpark

From floating 2000 Happy Clouds above the Tate Modern to make us all feel a bit better a couple of years ago to his brilliant comic-book-meets-social-commentary pop art canvases, artist and Aubin Gallery director Stuart Semple is always on message. And now he’s lending his talents to Amnesty International’s Write for Rights campaign. He’s created a series of prints on sale at Amnesty’s pop-up retail concept in Shoreditch’s newly opened Boxpark bearing the slogan, Shine a Light the Whole World Over. “It’s a lyric from Diana Ross’ Chain Reaction,” he told me, “each of us can do something that shines […]

Del Aziz

Clapham’s really been upping its culinary game of late with Soif and The Rookery opening only last week. And now Eastern Mediterranean restaurant group Del’Aziz is launching its sixth site and serious South London hub bang in the middle of Clapham Old Town. Just like its sister sites, Del’Aziz in Clapham has been designed by Shaun Clarkson with warm rosy and saffron tones and wooden and copper features throughout the restaurant, bars, deli-café and gift shop. The restaurant and main event will be open from 7am until 11pm at night. Breakfasts and brunches feature muesli and Greek yoghurt and Berber […]

Theatre Menu for NOPI

As soon as you walk into NOPI, it’s immediately clear Yotam Ottolenghi is behind it. A string of Asian flavours and those from the Middle-East, too, run through the menus of this all-day, modern brasserie … and it’s little wonder it’s fast becoming the discovered treasure tucked away behind busy Piccadilly. But the restaurant – whose piece de resistance is the long, canteen table which looks out into the open, frenzied kitchen in the basement – is getting just that little better. Because of its prime location in TheatreLand, NOPI has quite rightly produced its very own theatre menu. On […]

Bluebird Christmas Grotto

Winter wonderland comes to King's Road this month when a Xmas grotto pops up in the restaurant's famous courtyard complete with Father Christmas, hot dogs, toffee apples and popcorn – ostensibly for the kids but let's face it – it sounds pretty good to us as well – especially if you factor in the spiced mulled wine. You can also browse through festive stalls selling foodie gifts including gingerbread men and mince pies from the Bluebird Bakery, hog roast and burgers, roasted chestnuts and Bluebird Christmas trees – all while being serenaded with carols and lashings of good cheer. The […]

3 night stand at Canteen

Covent Garden’s pop-up offshoot of Canteen  is hosting a very special season of guest celebrity chefs this month. Kicking off proceedings tonight is dynamic duo Angela Hartnett and Emma Duggan of Murano and Whitechapel Gallery Dining Room fame with Rare Roast Rib of Longhorn Beef, Dauphinoise potato, cavolo nero, thyme jus and horseradish cream. But don’t worry if you’ve not managed to score yourself a reservation.
