If your tickets to the 2012 event are already burning a hole in your pocket, have no fear. The Olympics have arrived earlier than expected. This week, Open Weekend 2011 will be celebrating the proximity of the Olympics and Paralympics by hosting several cultural and sporting events for the general public in various locations around the capital. From 22nd – 24th July, Londoners will be invited to enjoy ‘ Dysarticulate’ (a large installation situated in Canary Wharf, where artists and audiences will create paper flags made from book pages), ‘BP Saturdays’ (an artist-led set of workshops for all the family at […]

Salad but not as we know it…

Pearl’s head mixologist, Anthony Balik, is showcasing his cocktail credentials with the innovative introduction of the restaurant’s brand new Salad Bar: inspired by this season’s flavours, he and head chef Jun Tanaka, have developed a drinks menu that’s crunchy as they come.     So what’s on offer? The Waldorf gets a remake with home-infused walnut vodka muddled with celery, heightened by citrus notes of pressed apple and grape and served with a side of grape jelly, walnuts and celery sticks. Next up is The Greek integrating Gin Mare, made with the highest quality Mediterranean botanicals, with a delicate tomato […]

Bunga Bunga

Alone, they're responsible for reintroducing Londoners to the wonders of revolving dance floors and spirit-sipping from pretty china teacups. But that was never going to be the end of Charlie Gilkes and Duncan Stirling's influence on the capital. For while the entrepreneurial duo have popularised the cult of speakeasy bars through Chelsea locale Barts and made the upbeat, cheesy tracks synonymous with the 1980s cool again at nightclub Maggie's, their next project – whose Battersea location will sit outside their tried and tested zone of Chelsea – will not so much see them delving into a theme, as much as […]

Making Street Kitchen British.

Walking into Finsbury Avenue Square, it’s hard not to notice the silver airstream caravan sitting by the UBS buildning. Head round to the front and you’ll find a converted kitchen with Chef’s Jun Tanaka of Pearl Restaurant and Mark Jankel of The Food Initiative in there serving out top quality food. When I say top quality, Chef Jankel spent 18 month scouring the U.K. sourcing the ingredients to ensure that everything on the menu is 100% British, and combining them with the skill’s of both chef’s, treat yourself to a hearty lunch, rather than nipping to the local coffee chain […]

Bluebird Food Store hosts Sushinho.

Last night, Bluebird launched their pop up sushi boutique, where if you weren't concentrating, you may have thought you'd wandered into a relaxed Brazilian Carnival! With a variety of sushi, and fantastic cocktails provided by Sushinho, from just down the road who pride themselves on their Brazilian (large) portions of the cultural Japaneses cuisine. Of particular interest were the prawn and fresh strawberry pieces that went down extremely well with the Caipirinhas available. I was also left pleasantly filled by the seaweed wraps, yet still wanted more! Bento boxes will be available to take away, or if you prefer, to […]

Just in time for the hot weather, 80s inspired nightclub Maggie’s has created the ultimate summer cocktail: the aptly named Slush Yuppie.     Bar manager Alejandro Madrid has introduced an original Slush Yuppie machine to the venue but he’s added one key ingredient- alcohol meaning that revellers can slurp the original sweet slush yuppie flavours blended with Bacardi Superior rum, crushed ice and strawberries. Maggie’s is named after 1980s Prime-Minister-turned-icon Maggie Thatcher whose famous speeches you can hear playing in the loos, while Thatcher memorabilia vies for space on the walls along with iconic ’80s paraphernalia from A Team […]
