Royal Memorabilia, a Tribute

Bedecked in bunting and humming along to one more Royal parody, it was time to join the big guns for a celebration of all things crafty at Smythson yesterday. Samantha Cameron’s old haunt unveiled an exhibition that will run until the 3rd May at the Smythson’s New Bond Street store, co-curated by Janice Blackburn of Sotheby’s. Five young talents have interpreted the much-peddled Royal Wedding theme in contemporary and unusual ways, creating pieces which are now on sale in the store. Find Zoe Ross’s ‘Paper Bride’ alongside Katie McBride’s tea set, entitled ‘There is a Festive Heir About Town’; a […]

Byron Haymarket

The award winning hamburger restaurant has just launched its 14th site bringing its now famous burgers to London’s Haymarket. The design has been inspired by the history of the capital and takes in both contemporary and traditional London. The 130 cover restaurant features a gloss white telephone box entrance, shiny red tables and pinstriped seating made to the pattern of 1950s London Underground upholstery. The lighting too is inspired by a Tube map with its bright neon colours. One wall is dedicated to vintage royal memorabilia while illustrations depicting all sides of London life from the Trellick Tower to The […]

Housebites

The supperclub is well and truly on our radar. Not content with going out to restaurants for dinner, foodies are keen to show off their own culinary skills and hosting prowess by inviting fellow gastronomy fiends into their homes. New website housebites.com is making the process easier, by allowing people to search for dining events in their local area. Anyone can host, and can post their menu, price and invite online for potential guests to peruse. Stripping dining of its traditional formal constraints, the housebite is the perfect way to get friendlier with the locals whilst sampling some great food […]

Cult of Beauty Tea

The Criterion is launching a fabulous new tea menu to celebrate the Victoria & Albert Museum’s Cult of Beauty exhibition running through 17 July. The exhibition highlights the Aesthetic movement from 1860 – 1900 which is the era when Criterion itself was built. The movement was all about “art for art’s sake” popularising beautiful paintings and sculptures that did not have a moral message and were simply a visual delight. The new menu recalls the art exhibits and the food of the late 1800’s and highlights include Potted Rabbit with dried fruit, melba toast and pomegranate chutney – inspired by […]

Melancholia

Check out the trailer for Lars von Trier’s new movie MELANCHOLIA: “A beautiful movie about the end of the world” starring Kirsten Dunst, Charlotte Gainsbourg and Kiefer Sutherland alongside Alexander SkarsgÃ¥rd and Charlotte Rampling. The plot centres around Justine (Kirsten Dunst) and Michael (Alexander SkarsgÃ¥rd) who are celebrating their marriage at a sumptuous party in the home of Justine’s sister (Charlotte Gainsbourg) and brother-in-law (Kiefer Sutherland). Thus far, a comedy of manners, right? But coming from the director of 2009’s controversial Antichrist, we couldn’t expect a gentle Altman-like Gosford Park. So, while the festivities are taking place, the planet, Melancholia, […]

Dorsia

South Kensington’s much loved Firehouse bar, restaurant and club has recently been taken over LVMH style and is due to relaunch as Dorsia on 25 May following a massive £2.4million refurbishment. Fans of Bret Easton Ellis’ American Psycho will doubtless recognise the name from the mythological destination resto in the book (and Christian Bale’s hang out in the movie adaptation) and we can certainly imagine a slew of goodlooking young bucks comparing business cards in the sophisticated Kensington location. The 300 capacity venue will comprise a members’ club, bar and restaurant and while it’s still under construction, the space promises […]

Spuntino cntd.

Clever Russell Norman. Following on from the popularity of first venture, Polpo, he could well have allowed success to go to his head and either supersized Ramsay style or expanded into an ill-considered and uber-hastily conceived chain. But no. The former Caprice Holdings Ops Director has played a waiting game with his two ensuing ventures – Polpetto above the French House and more recently Spuntino, his diminutive ‘no phone no reservations’ Italo-US brand extension in Rupert Street – delaying opening until he found his perfect venues. So a new one-night-only Young and Foodish Spag-Wednesday Meatball Pop-Up is a fitting development. […]
