Petit Pois Cupcakes

Remember Harry Eastwood of not-so-guilty C4 pleasure, Cook Yourself Thin and follow-up cookbook Red Velvet & Chocolate Heartache? Well if you thought her recipes substituting butter and fat for vegetables (yes really) sounded like a good idea in theory but you couldn’t be bothered to put spoon to mixing bowl for yourselves  – you no longer have to. She’s teamed up with US entrepreneur, Ashley Maddox to launch Petit Pois, a new and extremely virtuous range of cupcakes in which butter (and some of the sugar too for carbophobes) is replaced by pumpkin, courgette and beetroot. Each of the four […]

Tanqueray Live Lounge

We’re loving the Tanqueray ® Live Lounge set amid Kensington’s Roof Gardens. Playing host to live music performances from some of the UK’s hottest unsigned acts, it’s certainly a great way to fly in the face of those self-righteous new year puritans. Following a closure for private parties over the festive season it’s reopening on Friday and Saturday nights from tomorrow 14 January from 7.30pm through to April 2011. Visitors can sip on elegant Tanqueray gin cocktails while taking in the live acts playing in the Green Bar or hole up next door in the VIP Tanqueray Red Room. You […]

Opera Tavern

Whereas once Covent Garden was more about the tourists and theatre diners, it’s now giving Soho a run for its money with its quirky new eateries like the Caring backed Bill’s Cafe in new dining destination St Martin’s Courtyard. A further treat opening at the end of this month, is Opera Tavern in Catherine Street. The new venue comes from the people behind award winning tapas gems of W1, Salt Yard and Dehesa, Sanja and Simon Mullins. The Legend of Aubin and Wills

A Redchurch Street gallery collaboration with artist and curator Stuart Semple that’s linked to Shoreditch House was certainly an inspired spin off for the preppy Jack Wills brand and more so in that it’s morphed into an entirely credible addition to the east London scene. Opening at the Aubin Gallery tomorrow is Legends II, the new solo exhibition from Adham Faramawy, Slade Art graduate linked to the infamous !WOWOW! collective which boasts Gareth Pugh as an alumnus and is famed for performance art and raves – notably one attended by Lauren Bush with two CIA bodyguards in tow! In Legends, […]

The Gilbert Scott

Hot on the heels of his eponymous two Michelin starred restaurant, Marcus Wareing at The Berkeley, comes The Gilbert Scott at the brand new St Pancras Renaissance Hotel London. Previously named The Midland Grand, the 138 year old Gothic building has been rechristened after its Victorian architect, Sir George Gilbert Scott. The venue has undergone an extensive restoration by Manhattan Loft Corporation and The Gilbert Scott will occupy the original entrance hall and coffee room and feature seating for 120 in the restaurant and a further 52 seats in the bar. The interior has been designed by David Collins. The […]

Biutiful

“When an owl dies, it spits a hairball from its beak…” Let’s face it, no film directed by Alejandro González Iñárritu is going to be easy watching but for different reasons. Where Amores Perros, 21 Grams and Babel were complex and intellectually taxing with fractured interwoven narratives, Biutiful is linear yet emotionally draining. Set amid the Barcelona underclass, the central character is Uxbal, Javier Bardem, who, in Iñárritu’s own words “is a guy whose life is so busy and complicated that he can’t even die in peace.” He’s dying of cancer. Uxbal is a hero but in the traditional ancient […]

A little ice music…

If a chilly rear end acquired from spending the best part of an hour on your bottom on the ice rink doesn’t amount to your ideal weekend entertainment, there’s still fun to be had at Somerset House. From today until Sunday, you can enjoy the rather more refined pursuit of a musical concert on the River Terrace. But it’s not any old concert. Ice Music is a unique winter experience featuring live musical performances by acclaimed Norwegian composer and instrumentalist Terje Isungset using instruments crafted from pure ice. We’re talking fragile and ephemeral ice horns, an iceophone and ice percussion […]

MORI

Amirkhan Mori and Dan Levine started MORI in St John’s Wood just a year ago and quickly followed with a site on Marylebone High Street but the duo aren’t ones to rest on their laurels and have plans for a chain of 10 across the UK and abroad over the next two years. They are kicking off 2011 the way they intend to continue with a new outlet on London’s King’s Road. “We’re delighted that London customers have taken so quickly to our concept of offering quality, healthy food, and see us as a real alternative to expensive Japanese restaurants,” […]

A Real Winner

You might not know that The Alma was a battle fought in 1854 during the Crimean War. But enough with the history lesson, it’s also a Wandsworth gastropub that’s gone all Shoreditch and opened a seriously chic 23 room boutique hotel. Design-led yet practical rooms have been conceived by the award-winning RDD, each with its own bespoke furniture, textured fabrics and wallpaper by Nina Campbell. No chintz here thank you very much! Factor in delicious posh pub grub from head chef Martin O’Brien, a 24 hour concierge, use of the nearby Esporta Spa and Gym for all guests and B&B […]

Poppies Fish & Chips

Spitalfields Market has certainly cleaned up its act but forgive us for finding the sea of restaurant chains shiny but a little soulless. How we long for the good old days of spit and sawdust pubs (as long as they serve a decent gin and tonic…) and traditional fish and chip shops. But wait, what’s this we’re hearing about a new fish and chip shop opening on Hanbury Street? Yes, from later this month we can expect to smell that delicious vinegary aroma wafting on the breeze as the 50 seater Poppies Fish and Chips opens up for business. This […]
