Fortnum&Mason Marmalade Competition

The celebrities were out in force at the weekend’s Golden Globe Awards. But with the boffins’ recent aspersions on the merits of collagen it seems that the only ways to knock off a decade by the Oscars are surgery or Mila Kunis’ $7,000 HD Diamond and Ruby Peel. Or not. Paddington creator, Michael Bond claimed last week that his 53 year old bear owes his youthful looks to a diet of marmalade sandwiches. Either way, you’ve got until 14 February to enter the Fortnum & Mason homemade marmalade competition in celebration of the Dalemain Marmalade Awards.  Entries will be judged […]

Mushu

There’s been a whole lot of Eastern promise in the West End of late: the brilliant Inamo sequel with its Wii generation cuisine on Lower Regent Street; the ultra fashionable Ora on Little Portland Street and this month’s star opening, Cocochan on James’ Street. However, for a more ‘January-wallet’ friendly Oriental fix that doesn’t involve a conveyor belt, a chain or dingy doorway in Chinatown, there’s a Fitzrovia newcomer called Mushu that’s looking like a real winner. Admittedly the name Mushu doesn’t bode particularly well but the little Izakaya style bar-restaurant is proving both a daytime draw for the local […]

Connoisseur Club

So much for the VAT increase. In the 2011 equivalent of Marie Antoinette’s ‘Let them eat cake”, a new club is throwing austerity to the winds. Connoisseurs, a luxury Mayfair piano bar specialising in uber-rare wines and spirits is launching later this year. Founder, Dan Thomson, aims to “bring a luxury experience into a friendly and intimate environment, to be enjoyed with like-minded people”. In the run-up to the launch Connoisseurs is staging a series of monthly events kicking off with a dinner at Home House members’ club with all proceeds donated to the Outward Bound Trust. What’s on the […]

Kisses from Andaz

With Valentine’s Day now only a month off there will soon be a whole lot of nervous men trawling the internet for inspiration. However, even the most high-maintenance wife or girlfriend is sure to be blown away by Andaz 1901’s answer to that V-Day dilemma. Over dinner at the restaurant, couples can have their kiss immortalised by London artist Rebecca Ivatts. The classically trained Ivatts sketches and paints like a modern day Michelangelo and is a master at rendering the human form in all its energetic beauty. Guests can opt for a sketch to take home on the night or […]

The Legend of Aubin and Wills

A Redchurch Street gallery collaboration with artist and curator Stuart Semple that’s linked to Shoreditch House was certainly an inspired spin off for the preppy Jack Wills brand and more so in that it’s morphed into an entirely credible addition to the east London scene. Opening at the Aubin Gallery tomorrow is Legends II, the new solo exhibition from Adham Faramawy, Slade Art graduate linked to the infamous !WOWOW! collective which boasts Gareth Pugh as an alumnus and is famed for performance art and raves – notably one attended by Lauren Bush with two CIA bodyguards in tow! In Legends, […]

Created by Design Research Studio under the direction of Tom Dixon, the new restaurant and bar will be the fourth dining space at the Academy from the group. Steak Tuesdays

We’ve heard about Meatball Mondays but those with more upmarket tastes and who need an extra day to recover from the weekend will love the new Steak Tuesday concept from JW Steakhouse at Park Lane’s Grosvenor Hotel. The Gilbert Scott

Hot on the heels of his eponymous two Michelin starred restaurant, Marcus Wareing at The Berkeley, comes The Gilbert Scott at the brand new St Pancras Renaissance Hotel London. The venue has undergone an extensive restoration by Manhattan Loft Corporation and The Gilbert Scott will occupy the original entrance hall and coffee room and feature seating for 120 in the restaurant and a further 52 seats in the bar. The interior has been designed by David Collins. The […]

Biutiful

“When an owl dies, it spits a hairball from its beak…” Let’s face it, no film directed by Alejandro González Iñárritu is going to be easy watching but for different reasons. Where Amores Perros, 21 Grams and Babel were complex and intellectually taxing with fractured interwoven narratives, Biutiful is linear yet emotionally draining. Set amid the Barcelona underclass, the central character is Uxbal, Javier Bardem, who, in Iñárritu’s own words “is a guy whose life is so busy and complicated that he can’t even die in peace.” He’s dying of cancer. Uxbal is a hero but in the traditional ancient […]

A little ice music…

If a chilly rear end acquired from spending the best part of an hour on your bottom on the ice rink doesn’t amount to your ideal weekend entertainment, there’s still fun to be had at Somerset House. From today until Sunday, you can enjoy the rather more refined pursuit of a musical concert on the River Terrace. But it’s not any old concert. Ice Music is a unique winter experience featuring live musical performances by acclaimed Norwegian composer and instrumentalist Terje Isungset using instruments crafted from pure ice. We’re talking fragile and ephemeral ice horns, an iceophone and ice percussion […]

Amaranto

The Four Seasons Hotel in Park Lane is set to reopen next month having undergone one serious £125 million makeover during its two year closure. And we're pleased to report that it seems no expense has been spared when it comes to the hotel's brand new destination restaurant either. Amaranto has its own entrance via Hamilton Place and boasts lounge areas, a restaurant and conservatory, bar, private dining room and even a garden terrace. Flexibility is the name of the game here and the idea is that diners can eat or drink in any of the spaces they choose from […]
