Hotel group von Essen have just announced the opening date of its first new build and London hotel, Verta. Balthazar in Covent Garden

Keith McNally, eastender turned impressario of the NYC restaurant scene, is already in bed with London’s own Richard Caring and looks set to open his first London venture in Covent Garden’s former Theatre Museum – Caring pipped Wolseley owners, Chris Corbin and Jeremy King to that particular post earlier this year. And while there’s still the little matter of Caring’s first attempt at planning permission being refused from the council, everyone is confident that a few tweaks will win over any pencil-pushing detractors. In typically bullish style, Caring initially tried to buy out Mc Nally’s six New York restaurants for […]

Courtyard @ 51

Once again The Courtyard at Buckingham Gate promises Arabian Nights spent under the London stars. The garden and terrace, now in its second year, has added a new raised dining veranda for the summer season. Centrepiece for the courtyard itself is a fountain adorned with cherubs and a Shakespearean frieze sweeps along the terracotta façade of the townhouses surrounding the garden. A new menu of new boutique cocktails designed by Grand Marnier is the perfect way to lose an afternoon in style and we love the Grand Esprit (elderflower & strawberry refresher). But it's after the sun has set that […]

Plot to sell The Ritz

A plot to sell the Ritz Hotel in London was a "simple but well-targeted and ambitious scam", a court has heard. Conn Farrell, 57, Patrick Dolan, 68, and Anthony Lee, 49, are accused of trying to sell the landmark hotel in Piccadilly for £250m. The men "sucked in" their carefully chosen victims by offering them false promises of a deal described as "complete fantasy", Southwark Crown Court was told. All three deny conspiracy to defraud. Mr Dolan, of Philip Lane, Tottenham, Mr Farrell, of Cambridge Road, Aldershot, Hampshire, and Mr Lee, of Broad Lane, Goole, East Yorkshire, are accused of defrauding Terence […]

Food Takes Centre Stage

This month sees two food focused relaunches. Notting Hill’s The Lonsdale is being reborn as The Lonsdale Bar and Restaurant – a brand new W8 steakhouse presided over by head chef, Jason Wallis and then, although it launched only last year, roaring 20s speakeasy, Proud Cabaret has just emerged from an extensive overhaul as a fully fledged City restaurant. Hailing from Hawksmoor and The Palm, Jason Wallis has a great track record as a perfectionist, forging relationships with master butchers to ensure any meat he touches is of the highest standard and has, unsurprisingly, chosen free range beef cuts from […]
