Halloween Hospitality

With all this talk about Halloween parties and full-costume-required events, we’re going to need somewhere to stay this Halloween (who wants to get the Tube dressed as a pumpkin?). May we suggest the London Sanderson and the St Martins Lane, the bars of which will be offering some delectable spooky-themed cocktails alongside some great special offers for the big weekend. Indulge in a “7 Deadly Sins”, or perhaps a glass of “Cursed Water” as you ready yourself for a night out in the capital, with the safe knowledge that luxe accommodation and impeccable service await you the next morning. The […]

Damien Hirst – No Love Lost

The Wallace Collection is certainly the only place for hauteur artists to exhibit. Surrounded by old masters and beloved classics, Damien Hirst has chosen this gallery to show his new exhibition, “No Love Lost.” However, perhaps it is this very juxtaposing which serves to exemplify how Hirst is more of an extraordinary business man and self promoter and exposes his limitations as an artist. The exhibition consists of a selection of oil paintings of skulls set against dark, Prussian blue backgrounds and accompanied by different objects, such as iguanas, ashtrays, lemons, shark teeth or beetles. Most of the paintings feature […]

Let them eat cake

As the nights of winter draw in, our good resolutions involving salads, juices and negative calories have gone south along with the sunshine. Our melanin deprived bodies are craving comfort food like never before and we want to have our cake, eat it and then go back for seconds. Fortunately, with the opening of three new luxury bakeries, this shouldn’t pose too much of a problem. Launching on Connaught Street at the end of the month is Cocomaya Bakery from the team behind London’s gorgeous chocolate emporium of the same name. Brainchild of Agent Provocateur founder Serena Rees, fashion designer […]

It is a rare chance to see Cuba’s finest musical export in the UK, bringing their Latin […]

MuTATE BRITAIN

There’s something afoot under Ladbroke Grove’s Westway.  Cordoned off from Portobello’s right hand market by massive hoardings – it feels as if you’re entering the backstage area at a rock concert – you pays your £1 and enters the wild and wacky world of MuTATE BRITAIN, an art events movement run by friends and collaborators.  This urban extravaganza is called One Foot in the Grove so roll up for an underground big top.      Marvel at the murals decorating the arches – some miniature version  have trompe l’oeil frames painted onto the walls around them and some are just insanely massive.  Mutoid […]

The Kingly Club

Night club kingpins are ten a penny but Soho’s prestigious Kingly Club members’ destination has crowned itself a new queen. The glamorous Charmaine Haig has just taken over as the club’s queen bee and the new management is proving quite a force to be reckoned with. The stylish venue was once the home of London’s legendary 1960’s Pinstripe Club where the rich and famous of the swinging decade partied with abandon. Regulars included the likes of Oliver Reed, Peter O'Toole, Audrey Hepburn, George Best, Steve McQueen, Richard Harris and Laurence Olivier and even Marilyn Monroe and Tony Curtis visited whilst […]

Adam Neate

Adam Neate first came to the public prominence when he distributed 1000 of his paintings on the streets of London, for people to either admire or take away with them.  You’d better hope you did the latter or you’ll now be kicking yourselves as his work is now commanding five figure sums from the world’s top collectors.  He’s rapidly become one of Britain’s most exciting young talents at the forefront of a radical new movement in contemporary art.  The 31 year old’s trademark cardboard works have become an iconic symbols of the UK street art generation, avidly collected worldwide.  […]

Essies Fall Collection

Essie has been leading the way for years in the nail department, with every reputable nail salon now stocking them. Their autumn collection “Cuddle with Colour,” is just another example of how Essie can do no wrong. Stepping away from their conventional collections this fall, Essie reveals 6 different colours and with a few surprises. Essie’s founder, Essie Weingarten, describes the collection as “optimistic and cheerful,” and with colours ranging from the softer more wintery palettes, such as ChinChilly, Angora Cardi and Mink Muffs, to the more luminous Midnight Cami, Bright Tights and Pink Parka, it’s easy to see why. Oxjam

Previous years’ incarnations of Oxjam took place in Oxfam’s Dalston store on London’s now uber destination of Kingsland Road.  This week, however, saw four sell out secret gigs performed in the charity’s Tooting branch.  And though I’m not entirely sure that T’Broadway has quite the same kudos as its east end affiliate, it does boast a Primark – not to mention 99p eye-brow threading – which surely counts for something.  Only 100 tickets were sold for each night but the gigs certainly put Mary Queen of Shops’ efforts at Save The children to shame.  With blackout curtains in place from […]

Sonia Rykiel for H&M

Another designer has jumped onto the High street bandwagon. Last week it was Christopher Kane for Topshop, now Sonia Rykiel is designing for H&M. This winter will see the Parisian ‘Queen of Knits’ take on a new genre, this time stepping into the world of lingerie and accessories. The collection is set to launch in 1,500 H&M stores worldwide, as well as Sonia Rykiel’s major boutiques around the world. This will be the first time that H&M will see a designer foray into lingerie and accessories. Known for her hallmark of individuality, Rykiel describes her designs as “la demonde” (unfashion). […]
