Noughty eighties

Brace yourselves fashionistas; the unflattering fashions of the eighties are making a comeback. And if flashbacks of stone washed denim and Dr Martens don’t make you recoil in horror, then this summer could be your season.  We’ve already seen (and sampled) the rise of the skinny jean so all you’ll need now to complete the throwback is a batwing jumper, a garish hair band and a set of sturdy shoulder pads. But for those of you too young to remember other statements that made the decade so memorable, here are a few of the trends that will be enjoying a resurgence this […]

A good day for Russian oligarchs

Chilling news for hacks at The Evening Standard, former Russian KGB spy Alexander Lebedev has bought the London local paper for a mere £1, the price of two copies of the newspaper. The sale was announced to staff by editor-in-chief Paul Dacre, at 10am yesterday in the crowded Kensington newsroom. The paper, which can be bought from news stands for 50p, has been making losses over the last few years and it was for this reason that owner Lord Rothermere, who met Mr Lebedev at a party, decided to sadly hand over his paper. New boss, Mr Lebedev, is said […]

Clubs look Overseas

To combat the collapse of the pound private member’s clubs are looking overseas to secure membership in 2009. Following the influx of Europeans travelling to the UK taking advantage of the strength of the Euro against the pound it appears that private member’s clubs are expanding their membership offers in order to keep themselves afloat. One Alfred Place is one private member’s club leading the way: ‘Since the market point has weakened, we’ve had a steady increase in overseas enquiries and we expect this to grow throughout 2009,’ says owner Rob Shreeve. Goodbye to Cafe Royal

Furniture and memorabilia from Oscar Wilde’s favourite joint, Café Royal, went under the hammer at Bonhams today. A packed floor started fiercely bidding at 11 this morning at the Knightsbridge salesroom.  The lots, which included clear glass and gilt chandeliers from the Dubarry, Dauphin, George and Napoleon Suites and a mid-20th century full-size boxing ring which used to host black tie dinners in its heyday, reached well over their expected prices. ‘The sale went incredibly well, it can be really unpredictable but we made several thousand over what we were hoping. There wasn’t one lot which didn’t sell, we are […]

Barts Launch

Barts is a quirky new 'speak easy' style bar on the prestigious Sloane Avenue in the heart of Chelsea. It is the brainchild of Duncan Stirling and Charlie Gilkes, the young duo behind Sloane Square nightclub, Kitts. The pair were inspired by many of the venues they had visited around the world, from New York to Tokyo. As Charlie says, “part of New York's excitement is that it's full of surprises, and some of the best bars and restaurants are where you'd least expect them.” Among other places, they were especially intrigued by a Mexican restaurant in Manhattan called 'L'Esquina. In fact, the treatment is great anytime.  Go for a quick ‘polish change’ 15 minute session in your lunch, or alternatively have the Cowshed […]
