The American Restaurant That Went South

It’s not a one-way-avenue at Avenue. The restaurant has pivoted from a Contemporary American menu to a modern Asian cuisine fused with a fiery South American twist. The about-turn is a huge change for the St James’s modernist cube of a restaurant. Part of the D&D empire, Avenue has taken their inspiration from the ‘Ring of Fire’, not the Johnny Cash song but the culinary regions in the volcano belt of the Pacific rim. Executive Chef Mickael Weiss will be rolling out his new menu seven days a week and the new dishes include spiced Tuna tartare, tobiko, yuzu emulsion, […]

7 Family-Friendly Places to Eat

Eating out with small children isn’t for the faint-hearted. It requires military precision levels of organisation and a significantly blasé approach to the damage that Operation Eat Out might cause to the general surroundings. But there are some restaurants which not only cater for kids, but will actively welcome them too, and since half term is almost here, we have a pick of some of the best for you to try out.

We Review: Sticks N Sushi

What? Just as Ronseal does exactly what it says on the tin, Sticks N Sushi, does exactly as the name suggests, it serves yakitori sticks and sushi. Finding ourselves free on a rainy Saturday afternoon and with a new Sticks N Sushi having recently opened in Nova, we took the good, old, (slow), District Line over to Victoria. New? Opening in London for the first time in 2012, they started in Wimbledon and have gone on to open restaurants in Oxford, Cambridge, Covent Garden, Canary Wharf and Greenwich. This latest restaurant opened at the end of last year.  Where? Part of Nova, […]

Hey Hey Mr Postman! What Should We Do This Half Term?

It may be snowing outside, but the season is marching on and somehow it’s nearly half term time already. Commuters rejoice, my bus will be significantly more on-time without the school traffic; but parents, what are you going to do? How about the Postal Museum? If Postman Pat had been on the mean streets of East London rather than the mean streets of Greendale, he might have swapped his van for the Mail Rail, the 100 year-old post train that runs beneath the capital. No room for Jess, but room for you and your little ones. And that’s not all, the […]

Farm Girl Opens in Chelsea

Back in 2015 Farm Girl opened their first site in Notting Hill, last year they launched their concession at the Sweaty Betty Carnaby Street flagship and now the restaurant known for its healthy Australian-inspired menu, has opened between the Kings Road and Fulham Road. During the day you’ll find the brunches and super lattes that they are known for, including: chai lattes; rose lattes; apple pancakes with coconut yoghurt; açai bowls with chia seeds and oven baked aubergine with chickpea sauce, mint and tahini yoghurt dressing. Unlike the other two Farm Girls, this new restaurant will serve the group’s first […]

Critics’ Choices: Everywhere We Reviewed In January

Some jobs give you duvet days, others season ticket loans, one of the perks of working for The Handbook is that we get to go on reviews. On any given night there’s probably one of our editorial team out selflessly snacking, sampling or swigging so that we can give you an honest appraisal. Here’s where the team headed in January: The Waldorf Hilton’s Charleston Tea Dance Fenella, our fearless editorial assistant, hit the tiles at The Waldorf Hilton and learnt to dance the Charlton while quaffing Champagne and scoffing scones! Check out the full review here… Gillray’s Vegan Menu Charlotte, […]

Ready, Steady, Bake! Bluebird’s Bake Off

Never again will I be able to hear the words ‘ready, steady’ without wanting to say baaake, as if I was Sue Perkins, more to the point, never again will I hear Sue say those words, yes, I’m probably still the only one who is bitter. Whilst the rest of you wait for the Great British Bake Off I will be heading to Bluebird, for the Bluebird Bake Off which will be held in support of charity WaterAid. The courtyard will be decorated with gingham bunting, cake stands and the smell of freshly baked pastries from bakeries such as Pearl […]

We Review: Theo Randall at the InterContinental

What: Counting Jamie Oliver as a fan (see his praise splashed across Theo’s website and books) and Jay Rayner who claims Theo Randall served him “the best meal” he had “all year”, I was admittedly looking forward to eating at Theo Randall at the InterContinental and it did not disappoint. New? This is Theo Randall’s first restaurant which he opened in November 2006, his latest restaurant is Theo’s Simple Italian. Where? InterContinental, 1 Hamilton Place, Mayfair, W1J 7QY www.theorandall.com On the menu: Theo Randall’s menu reflects his personal taste for food so the menu is Italian cuisine done in an unfussy […]

We Review: Texture’s Vegan Tasting Menu

What: Alongside their meat, fish and vegetarian tasting menus, Michelin-starred restaurant, Texture, has introduced the new and improved vegan tasting menu *cue fireworks and dramatic music*. New? Fairly new but going nowhere, the new menu will be a permanent feature although the dishes will be subject to change throughout the seasons. Where? 34 Portman Street, Marylebone W1H 7BY www.texture-restaurant.co.uk On the menu: Icelandic chef, Aggi Sverrisson, errs on the side of health conscious when it comes to his cooking and sees no butter or cream used in his kitchen, with an effort to cut sugar out where possible. The style of […]
