The Postal Museum’s New Exhibition: Voices From the Deep

On 16th February 1941, the merchant steam boat, SS Gairsoppa was torpedoed off the coast of Ireland by a German U-Boat. On board the boat were more than 700 personal letters, until now they have been trapped for 77 years on the bottom of the Atlantic Ocean, a mile deeper than the Titanic. Preserved by an airlock that formed as the boat sank, twelve bundles of letters have now been recovered alongside a silver ingot that was making its way from colonial India to the UK.
