Noughty eighties

Brace yourselves fashionistas; the unflattering fashions of the eighties are making a comeback. And if flashbacks of stone washed denim and Dr Martens don’t make you recoil in horror, then this summer could be your season.  We’ve already seen (and sampled) the rise of the skinny jean so all you’ll need now to complete the throwback is a batwing jumper, a garish hair band and a set of sturdy shoulder pads. But for those of you too young to remember other statements that made the decade so memorable, here are a few of the trends that will be enjoying a resurgence this […]

Cowshed

The ultimate sanctuary for girls is filled with an abundance of cosseting treatments.  Well known for their unique and kitsch style, the ‘nail-zone’ section is a relaxing and luxurious manicure haven.  With three chairs practically next door to each other, it’s the perfect way to catch up with friends.  Quick and easy, with televisions and coffees at your disposal (although the latter requires regular skilled hand-swapping) the experience is ideal for a Saturday morning pampering session. In fact, the treatment is great anytime.  Go for a quick ‘polish change’ 15 minute session in your lunch, or alternatively have the Cowshed […]

Posh underwear

Victoria Beckham has followed in the footsteps of husband David by slipping into Emporio Armani underwear for the Italian fashion house’s latest advertising campaign. The brooding black and white shots show the former Spice Girl reclining on a bed in nothing but lingerie, a pout and a pair of high heels. Fashion designer Georgio Armani revealed that he selected the 34-year-old mother of three for his spring/summer collection because she is a “stylish and intriguing woman.” And the leaking of the pictures happily coincided with Katie Holmes’ campaign for Mui Mui, in which the actress adopts a similar sultry look […]

Prada

Prada seem to have taken pole position yet again with their new Spring/Summer 09 advertising campaign. Photographed by the highly acclaimed Stephen Meisel and Heidi Slimane, the collection is Classicism with an edge. The women’s collection has been shot to look like an ancient stone bas-relief. Like the mythological characters, the models are positioned as though they are all interconnected, creating a dance-like effect. With porcelain skin against the brilliant gold and python print, Meisel shows just how integration between ancient and contemporary is done. For the menswear, Heidi Slimane captures timeless classicism with black and white and poetic stillness. […]

D&G LA

This week saw the opening of the LA D&G flagship store, attended by some of Hollywood’s finest and most fashionable, in participation with charitable cause The Art of Elysium. It is surprising, perhaps, that the dynamic duo known for their glittering red-carpet and party-friendly creations didn’t have a solid base in Los Angeles before. They are now however firmly established on Robertson Boulevard, nestled amongst Kitson, The Ivy, and the new Chanel concept store, in an ultra-modern building covering over 6000 square feet, designed by Dordoni Architetti Studio. The launch party turnout suggests a profitable future for the Italian design house, with […]

New Jackie

Vital bag news for 2009. Frida Giannini, the designer for Gucci, has created an up-sized, slouchier, hand-stitched “New Jackie,” reinterpreting the iconic shoulder bag made famous by Jacqueline Onassis when she was the wife of U.S. President John F. Kennedy. Giannini has steered the Gucci label in a more chic business like direction and for her spring/summer collection she has produced the “New Jackie” in every possible material from the GG logo to exotics like crocodile and snakeskin. Gucci’s roots are in accessories, as are those of its designer, and it shows in this classy new addition to the range. […]

Prada Paradise

While the English may be rushing to visit the new Westfield complex, Kuala Lumpur is busy adding even more extravagant shops to their prestigious mall, Pavilion.  This time it’s none other than Prada and set over two floors with three entrances, it seems to be making our giant Westfield look humble. Designed by Robert Baciocchi, the architect behind many a Prada store, the space which is set across 336 square meters, is made of backlit aluminium sections.  Baciocchi doesn’t end it here however, with alternate titanium and bronze finishing and a black marble stairway in a casing of bronzed mirrors, […]

Madonna for LV

When Style.com let slip a rumour about Madonna starring in the Vuitton Spring 09 campaign in November, no-one would have anticipated such a fast turn-around – not with simultaneous divorce proceedings, anyway. But yet again Madonna has proved herself to be beyond human capability, and churned out another killer fashion shoot to add to her many lists of accomplishments. The shoot, compromising of six images set in a smokey Parisian cafe, depict Madonna showing off her enviable toned physique, modelling an orange feathered skirt as worn by Jessica Stam on the Vuitton runway. Creative director Marc Jacobs has taken the fashion house […]
