The Porridge Café Pop-Up

What’s not to love about porridge? It’s healthy for you (it’s all about the slow releasing energy), it’s basically a duvet day in a bowl when you eat it on a rainy morning and the ways in which you can pimp it up are officially endless – we’re all about coconut and Greek yoghurt at the moment. And launching next month is The Porridge Café Pop-up on Paul Street which will be serving up big old bowls of porridge goodness 7am – 6pm, 7 days a week. There will be 11 grains to choose from including buckwheat and quinoa, coconut, […]

Rio Carnival comes to Sushisamba

Yes we know it’s Shrove Tuesday tomorrow and that means pancakes but you know what, we’re also celebrating the Rio Carnival and so is Sushisamba. The hybrid Japanese-Brazilian-Peruvian sushi restaurant is focusing on the Brazilian part with an evening of live performances from shimmering samba dancers, DJs, the booming sounds of Batucada drummers and a live feed of the carnival in Brazil.  Alongside the entertainment there is also a special menu with asparagus and salmon tempura, Carnaval Maki, scallop ‘seviche’ and Sambódromo which to you and me is white chocolate, mango mojito sorbet, lucuma jelly, banana and yamazaki. Tuesday 17th […]

The Hampton Court Palace Wedding Fair

We’ve had the flurry of engagements at Christmas and wedding season starts in a few months, so now is the time to start planning. Because believe it or not there is quite a lot to think about a wedding (who’d have thought?) there is the cake, the dress, the flowers, the napkins, decorations and that’s even before the downright nerve -wracking experience of who to ask to be your best man/ maid of honour. Well Hampton Court Palace is here to give a helping hand with the return of their wedding fair on the 22nd February. Taking place in the […]

The Ivy Chelsea Garden To Open

They say things come in threes: buses, potential suitors, bad luck (the last two a coincidence perhaps?) and now a third Ivy restaurant  from Caprice Holdings.  Following on from the launch of The Ivy Market Grill last year, they are opening their third venue, The Ivy Chelsea Garden on the Kings Road. So we admit we aren’t quite ready for alfresco dining, but when we are and when it opens (which is scheduled for the 30th March) then The Ivy Chelsea Garden is straight where we are heading to. There is a whole smorgasbord (don’t you just love that word) of […]

Shikumen Launches

Shikumen, a new affordable Chinese fine-dining restaurant, has slowly been opening its doors to the public since its opening a few months ago at The Dorsett Hotel on Shepherd’s Bush Green. The name Shikumen is so called after the traditional Shanghai stone house architecture of the 1940s that blended east and west which is reflected in the restaurant’s style. The Handbook popped down to see it for oursevles and found the whole experience was very authentic from the interior design, to the other guests and of course the food, which was aesthetically well-presented and consistent throughout the evening. In the […]

Bricks in the Sky Exhibition Opens

There are enough LEGO bricks to reach from earth to the moon ten times. And professional Lego artist Warren Elsemore is well on his way there (albeit cheating a bit), with his display of London-inspired Lego models 80 metres in the air.   ArcelorMittal Orbit is embracing its inner child this February with a Bricks in the Sky Lego exhibition in its upper viewing platform. The multi-coloured models will include the Queen Elizabeth Olympic Park, St. Paul’s Cathedral, Big Ben, Battersea Power Station and The O2, alongside London icons the red bus, the black cab and a red telephone box. […]

Bone Daddies’ 1st Pop-up: Shackfuyu

It might sound like a drunken misspelling of a swear word but Shackfuyu is Bone Daddies’ first pop-up restaurant, opening on Soho’s Old Compton Street towards the end of this month. As for the name, it’s a Japanenglish hybrid just like the food  – ‘Shack’ being a rough and ready space and ‘Fuyu’ meaning winter in Japanese. Ross Shonhan’s regularly changing menu will feature a selection of small dishes demonstrating his playful take on Japanese cuisine and the ‘drinking food’ served in the country’s izakayas. The single ingredient-led opening menu will feature Roasted Picanha of Beef with Kimchee Tare and […]

It might be the dreariest month of the year (we thought we’d knocked that on the head with Dry-January but, oh no, some joker has now come up with Veg-February) but the guys from Blue Marlin are doing their very best to melt the freeze and bring some Ibiza lovin’ to London. The National Portrait Gallery Relaunches Restaurant

Time to get your art on! The National Portrait Gallery is re-launching its Portrait Restaurant this Thursday following a month-long closure for ‘restoration’ – something that every portrait needs from time to time. Culinary director Helena Puolakka (Aubergine, La Tante Claire, Pierre Gagnaire and Skylon) and the restaurant’s head chef Steve Beadle (River Café) have created a new menu celebrating the best of British seasonal produce from land and sea with ingredients showcasing rare breeds such as Middle White pork and Hereford beef.
