Our Guide to… Christmas Afternoon Tea

It is beginning to look a lot like Christmas, and whilst we are all very excited about the most wonderful time of the year, it can sometimes be a little bit of a nightmare. Between fighting the crowds in your local supermarket to deciding which turkey to buy as well as present shopping it can all be just a touch stressful. Well, never fear, there is nothing better than an afternoon tea to settle those nerves. Combine this with a Christmas theme and it won’t be long until you are feeling the spirit. From edible snowman to cake pop baubles, […]

Bayou’s Blues Brunch

This weekend saw creole bar and restaurant, Bayou, launch its new Blues Brunch; it’s live music and a whole lot of soul food, which was just what we needed when the heavens decided to open and the whole of London was absolutely drenched. Just off Camden High Street, Bayou sits on Iverness Street, hidden behind the market stalls. It’s a strange little place, it’s quite basic, plain wooden tables and chairs and a bar running down one side, but nothing that stood out – apart from the loo walls which were painted with leaves and branches, there were also swamp […]

Zaika reopens after complete refurbishment

Sitting proudly at the top of Kensington High Street you might recognise Zaika, from the outside at least, as inside there has been a complete refurbishment which extends to the entire staff and management. The former bank makes for a stunning and striking venue with its high ceilings and marble features, the long bar betrays its first purpose with cash register shaped features running along the back of the bar which separates it from the main dining area. It is definitely worth taking a moment to pull up pew at the bar to enjoy their impressive selection of cocktails and […]

Happy Birthday to the Marquee Club

What do The Rolling Stones, Pink Floyd, Jimi Hendrix and David Bowie all have in common? For those who are not rock geniuses, the answer is The Marquee Club, which throughout the 60s, 70s and 80s witnessed the birth and rise of these now major artists. And having given birth to such iconic British figures, it is only apt that on 1st December we celebrate their 50 years of existence, with an anniversary party at Floridita London. Whilst we doubt there will be any guitar smashing going on, the evening does promise exclusive performances from bands such as Ten Years […]

Cheese, Glorious Cheese at Verden

Cheese, glorious cheese…here at The Handbook we cannot get enough of the stuff which is we were delighted to hear about Verden, a new restaurant led by Head Chef Tom Fraser (ex-Scott’s) in Clapton. The restaurant, which has its very own cold-room vaults in the basement, specialises in three of our favourite things: cheese, wine and charcuterie. Make sure to wrap up warm as customers are more than welcome to enjoy the vaults themselves, selecting homemade cheeses, to either eat-in or take-away.   Whilst the cheese is definitely something that we are going to be checking out, we were intrigued […]

Festive Treats at Winterville

After weeks of speculation, the first inklings of the food on offer at Winterville has been released and here at The Handbook, we are not disappointed. For those that haven’t already heard Winterville, which is taking place in Victoria Park, seeks to re-boot the festive format combining outdoor ice rinks, huge ferris wheels and horse drawn carriages with spiegeltents (Dutch travelling dance halls), roller discos and craft beers. No Christmas fair is complete without a mandatory food market going on at the side and Winterville’s will certainly not leave you wanting for more. With Voodoo Ray’s famous pizza slices and […]
