The Meat Co

After a mesmerising walk from the Car Park below Westfield shopping centre out on to the Restaurants South Terrace, it took a few wrong turns until we found the bright red awning ‘The Meat and Wine Company’. As I entered the large, spacious downstairs bar, it rather reminded me of a big East-African hotel lobby. However, as I gazed around, the orangey, mud and red coloured walls in this mellow lit room were decorated in subtle but classy mask like African decor. We were welcomed by smiley staff who guided us upstairs to the restaurant, lift or stairs – we […]

Eight Members Club, Bank presents Blind Bee

The Eight Members Club now presents Blind Bee, an exciting den two floors underground in Bank. The Handbook was lucky to visit the underground hub of one of Blind Bee’s first series of events – a large, dark, secretive sociable drinking scene with an array of cocktails available from the lengthy bar at the back of the club. Eight’s mixologists have created a concoction of cocktails –  try the signature Bee’s Knees of Orange infused vodka, Grand Marnier and a touch of lemon. The buzzing ambiance, with the surrounding walls adorned with sophisticated books and ornaments on its shelves, echoed […]

Bunnychow

Next London food truck sensation to set up permanent shop is the South African bunnychow, in Shoreditch’s BOXPARK. The bunny chow is said to have been invented in 1940’s Durban, when Indian sugar workers were looking for something sturdier than rotis to transfer their lunch from pot to plantation. Legend has it that one bright spark hollowed out a loaf of bread, filled it to the top with curry and the bunny was born. However it started, the trend soon spread across South Africa with bunnies hopping up all over the country – some filled with spicy veggies and some […]

£10, 10 courses, 10 years

Tom Aikens is operating a lottery for a one-day-only 10-course tasting menu for £10 to celebrate the restaurant’s 10th anniversary.  Aikens has delved deep into his recipe archive to develop a one-off, 10-course tasting menu featuring some of his most memorable and favoured dishes from the last decade including: 2003’s Roast scallops with poached grapes and pernod, grape juice and acidulated fennel. “2003 was a very exciting time for me – I was very nervous about the opening as I had been out of the London restaurant scene for three or four years but we were fully booked from the […]
