Blinis, Bellinis and Espresso Martinis at The Tower of London

Steeped in history, the Tower of London, is one of the city’s most iconic landmarks and is home to Crown Jewels. And now there is something else very special about it too, Moving Venue is now one of the approved caterers for bespoke and corporate events.  The Handbook were lucky enough to go down and have a private viewing of the Crown Jewels before being able to try ‘blinis, bellinis and espresso martinis’ courtesy of Moving Venue. The jewel in the crown, excuse the pun, had to be the revolving bar (very dangerous for self discipline) where the bellinis and […]

The murky water of the Thames might not look the most appealing, but it is in fact teeming with fish from salmon to trout and even eel – and London certainly loves its fish. Raymond Blanc takes on 21 apprentices

Raymond Blanc, the Michelin-starred chef renowned for his mentoring of young people, has now joined forces with Boris Johnson, mayor of London. This pairing may seem unlikely, but it’s all in the name of progress – the pair are encouraging the capital’s food venues to take on more young apprentices! Raymond himself has taken on an incredible 21 apprentices at his Brasserie Blanc restaurants, and both he and the Mayor believe there is huge potential for the scheme if other restaurants follow in his footsteps. The self-taught chef wants it to be easier for young ambitious people – he said […]

Celebrating Noodles at Suda Thai

March means Noodle Month at Suda Thai Restaurant in Covent Garden. Last night The Handbook paid a visit to the venue tucked away in St Martin’s Courtyard, to attend a special event to celebrate noodles! A small gathering of only around twenty people, we were treated to cooking displays by an adorable and talented Thai chef called Saipin Lee, who is also the Regional Manager of S&P Restaurants, and coincidentally was named in the 2011 'Women 1st Top 100 Most Influential Women'! Saipan gave us a great show, telling us all about the noodle dishes and ingredients, and after each […]

Carrara

St. James Theatre, the first newly built theatre complex in central London for 30 years, has now got its own on site restaurant, Carrara at St. James. Even the entrance is suitably dramatic – it’s accessed via an amazing sculptural staircase, designed by artist Mark Humphrey and transported from Italy –  six tons of white Carrara marble and all. Head chef René Cahane who boasts over 20 years’ experience working at some of London’s finest hotels, restaurants and private members’ clubs, has created a menu celebrating the best of British cuisine but with an Italian twist. He uses locally […]

Sneak Peak at Salvador

It’s a shame when an evening doesn’t quite live up to expectations. Last night saw the Handbook team head over to the greatly anticipated opening of Salvador & Amanda’s second London venue in Bloomsbury. Although promised canapés and cocktails, we were disappointed to see that the only ‘cocktail’ served was weak sangria spiced up with chopped fruit, and canapés were more nibbles – deli meats, sliced cheese and miniscule chips. If the plan was to give a taste of the kind of dishes the tapas bar will serve, it failed. Although we were served some delicious Padrón peppers and Chipirones […]
