A Shrine to Shrove Tuesday

February 12th, Shrove Tuesday, is nearly upon us with a second chance at your New Year’s Resolution. No Mean Feat At The Wheatsheaf

On Tuesday The Handbook headed to The Wheatsheaf, a pub ideally placed next to Borough Market and London Bridge Tube. The place was bustling, surprising so early on in the week, and the owner assured me that at the weekends it can be hard to squeeze everyone in. Impressive considering the place has only been open for 6 weeks. The staff were visibly a bit harassed but only because there were so many people and not that many of them – we were still served before the irritation set in however. The pub has a D.I.Y scheme – you tick […]

Welcoming back The Spaniards Inn

If you’re a fan of history, pubs, or both – you’ll be excited by the re-opening of one of the oldest pubs in the city: The Spaniards Inn, Hampstead. Built in 1585, this ancient venue is perhaps one of the most myth-soaked buildings in London, reputedly hosting legendary figures Dick Turpin, John Keats, Charles Dickens and Lord Byron, amongst others. After all those years, no wonder the place was in need of a lick of paint or two – it has now been sensitively restored, meeting the new year with a new look and a re-vamped menu. Old English leather banquettes […]
