Saturday Lunch at The Grove

The newly refurbished gastro pub situated in South London’s popular suburb, Balham, has also just re-launched their menu. As a resident of Balham and within walking distance of the pub, it was hard to resist the opportunity to go and taste their new Eastern American/British influenced menu. The revamp has done wonders and immediately walking into the restaurant there was a cosy and intimate atmosphere in a quirky and light space. To start, I had mussels with smoked bacon and pale ale. Sophie had the smoked rainbow trout and roasted chilli fish cakes. The tastes from the juices were delicious […]

Claridge’s Unveil Their Christmas Tree

Visitors and Londoners have been flocking to marvel at Claridge’s Christmas tree for many years and the hotel has just revealed their Christmas tree for 2012, designed by Kally Ellis the renowned British floral designers of McQueens. This year’s enchanting design has seen Ellis draw upon the natural world for inspiration. Its magnolia branches are covered with lichen moss and studded with crystal and emerald jewel eggs in white, gold and silver to create a canopy of colour and glamour that reflect and emulate the Art Deco beauty of the Mayfair hotel. Under the boughs of the tree McQueens have […]

Scallops, Steak and Shortbread at The White Horse

The infamous White Horse in Parsons Green has not only been refurbished, but it has also shaken up its menu, The Handbook team headed over on Friday night to see what was going on and try some of the great food they had to offer. We were sat upstairs in the dining room, lit by candles, it’s a snug retreat from the bustling bar downstairs. After some olives, we started with the Scallops with roasted squash puree, chestnut butter and bacon, in one word it was: gorgeous. The scallops worked so well with the roasted squash, the presentation was creative, […]

Portobello House

Portobello House, the hotel slash restaurant, perched on Ladbroke Grove recently launched their new Sunday-lunch menu. After finally arriving (a 2 hour drive… and I live in London) I was starving! The menu offered all the usual roasts and specials including steaks, burgers and salads. My starter was a rare beef fillet which was cooked to perfection with a rocket and parmesan salad. Although the restaurant was nearly empty, it did take a while for someone to clear our plates. However, once they had, my roast chicken arrived pretty swiftly – a beautifully tender piece of meat with a Yorkshire […]
