5 Hertford Street

Once upon a time, this Mayfair establishment was meant to be called Birley's. There was another instance in which it was due to be named Rupert's. It was also supposed to open in January. But it's better late than never for Robin Birley, who this month has opened his Mayfair establishment 5 Hertford Street after much delay and thwarted attempts. Birley, the son of the late Mark Birley, who once owned Harry's Bar, The Ivy, Le Caprice, among others, before selling the lot to restaurateur Richard Caring five years ago for £100million, will be much relieved his project is off the […]

Evans & Peel Detective Agency

Evans & Peel Detective Agency is a new Prohibition-style bar and restaurant behind a discreet doorway on Earls Court Road. The venue has a colourful history and has variously been a police drinking den, gay bar and a Thai restaurant fronting illicit activities. The only giveaway as to its location is a flickering light behind a glass window, to the right of the entrance. Once inside, ‘clients’ enter an agency office where they will find the ‘detective’ waiting. The challenge lies in finding the secret entrance to the bar. All furniture has been individually sourced. The tile and brick feature […]
