Art at the Arts Club

Not a member of The Dover Street Arts Club? Well you can get a sneak peak at what you’re missing and scope out two brilliant new exhibitions from US-based artists Brendan Fowler and Marlo Pascual being staged within the hallowed venue. Using vintage photographs and film from Ebay and thrift stores as a point of departure, Pascual blows up, crops, rotates, re-stages and adds what she calls ‘props’ – such as fluorescent tubes, rocks or anvils – to her images to create photo-based sculptures and installations. Fowler’s photos all come from personal moments in his life – from his studio […]

Nobu’s Afternoon (Green) Tea

We never had Nobu down as an afternoon tea venue but award-winning executive chef, Mark Edwards, has certainly put pay to that mistake. He’s created his own Japanese style take on the British tradition serving up a selection of savoury Takoyaki (beef and shrimp Japanese fried dumplings) with freshly steamed broccoli, Vanilla trifle (Vanilla custard, with an olive oil sponge soaked in Nobu’s sake with Chantilly cream) and Green tea doughnuts filled with a creamy yuzu curd. Six specialty teas on offer include Vintage white, Nobu green, and Japanese matcha. Afternoon tea is priced at £30pp and runs from 3-5.30pm […]

Italian Film Festival

Italian films have a hard time in the press, after all, they're not as internationally-known as the French and as under-the-skin violent like their Spanish counterparts. Nonetheless, Italy is the country that brought us the romantic Il Postino and the emotional Cinema Paradiso and Life is Beautiful – so, shouldn't we give it another go? Now's our chance. From 9th – 30th March, 'Made in Italy', the Italian Film Festival – now in its second year – is coming to town. Showing at Cine Lumiere in South Kensington and at the Italian Cultural Institute in Belgravia, thirteen new Italian flicks […]

Dishoom does Holi

Today and tomorrow mark the traditional Indian festival of Holi. That’s right, the time the sub-continent goes wild with everything (and everyone) getting pelted with coloured powder. Original Bombay café Dishoom in Covent Garden, will be festooned with eyecatching kites and coloured bunting, and guests can enjoy a specially created range of festive drinks. ‘DIY’ Naughty Holi lassis are inspired by those brightly-hued powders and feature light, sweet yoghurt drinks served with generous helpings of colourful powders in flavours such as banana, vanilla and cinnamon that guests can mix themselves. And while bhang lassis are strictly off the menu, Dishoom’s […]

Wine at Bodega Catena Zapata

Just how does one sail through March to the (hopefully) warmer climes of April? Wine could be a start. Well, if that's your train of thought, too, why not attend the Argentine wine tasting with Bodega Catena Zapata (a family-run winery which dates back to the early 1900s), that is being hosted by Plateau Restaurant on Monday 12th March? The Canary Wharf-based event, which starts at 6.30pm, is priced at £20 for 5 wines … while there are canapes being thrown in on the side, too. (Anything to help the wine go down well). Started up in 1902 by Nicola Catena, […]

Holy Smoke!

Tired of schlepping outside the bar for a cheeky fag? Well, while the sensible option might be to give up, Chelsea speakeasy Barts doesn’t do sensible. The alternative? An entire menu of tobacco infused cocktails. All the drinks on the Barts Goes up in Smoke menu are created with Perique Tobacco Liqueur which is lovingly crafted from the rarest tobacco in the world: Louisiana Perique. But while said liqueur contains all the rich aroma of this tobacco, we’re assured it’s in a form that greatly diminishes the health concerns associated with its traditional use. The Cig’nature Cocktail mixes Perique with […]

Another Carluccio …Marylebone

Do you like Carluccio's? Good. So do we. Good news, then, to hear that yet another is opening in the capital – yet this one comes with a bonus. Situated on Marylebone's Paddington Street, Carluccio's Italian restaurant – famous for its wonderful range of pastas ( Vongole in Bianco is our favourite), meat dishes and hearty breakfasts (Colazione Magnifica is wonderful) – is opening with a twist. This W1 branch will come – in the authentic Milanese tradition – with its very own Aperitivo Bar. In this elegant, high-stooled area, you can pick up some tasty small-plated dishes, or 'Stuzzichini', […]
