The Dorchester turns 80

Considered as one of London's greatest landmarks, The Dorchester's 80th anniversary year was never going to go uncelebrated. So far, charity Trees for Cities, have planted 80 'Future Great Trees' around the capital to mark this special date and the hotel is in the process of putting together its very own commemorative cocktail and anniversary tea. But now master fashion illustrator David Downton appears to have got in on the act. To mark the birthday, he has designed 80 special prints of the hotel.Downton – who is renowned for his classically elegant and inimitable portraits – said recently, "It was fascinating for me to try and […]

Bunga Bunga

Alone, they're responsible for reintroducing Londoners to the wonders of revolving dance floors and spirit-sipping from pretty china teacups. But that was never going to be the end of Charlie Gilkes and Duncan Stirling's influence on the capital. For while the entrepreneurial duo have popularised the cult of speakeasy bars through Chelsea locale Barts and made the upbeat, cheesy tracks synonymous with the 1980s cool again at nightclub Maggie's, their next project – whose Battersea location will sit outside their tried and tested zone of Chelsea – will not so much see them delving into a theme, as much as […]

Rodizio Rico

Thanks to Rodizio Rico, London’s authentic Churrascaria de Rodizio, a Brazilian carnival atmosphere is at play in Fulham Broadway – spilling out onto the street courtesty of a stunning alfresco Caipirinha Bar. But what is Churrascaria? Prounounced ‘shoe-hoss-korea’ it means barbecue in Portuguese and Rodizio means rotating. Just like in its native Brazil, there’s no formal menu so diners pay a fixed price and carvers pass from table to table, slicing sizzling roasted meats – straight from a charcoal fire – from skewers onto your plate. Experienced passador carvers glide from table to table with a huge array of meats […]

Assaggini

The Italian small plates trend is gaining further momentum with the launch of the contemporary Assaggini in Haymarket this month. The name Assaggini, translates as ‘a selection of small dishes’ and the restaurant offers just that. The menu boasting fresh seasonal Italian ingredients, is designed for sharing, matched with Italian regional wines and beers and is further divided into ‘stuzzicchini’ (smaller plates), ‘dalla fattoria’ (larger dishes literally meaning ‘form the farm’), ‘al mare’ (seafood), ‘contorni’ (vegetable side dishes) and ‘dolcetti’ (desserts – always sounding less sinful in the diminutive!). Take-aways are also available with a wide selection of Italian wines […]
