Kerbisher and Malt

We love it when retro favourites get revived and suddenly find themselves the hottest ticket du jour once again. And this year, it’s definitely the turn of the humble fish and chips to make a hipster comeback! From Poppies in Spitalfields, the old school East End chippie founded by Pat ‘Pop’ Newland (with its crunch batter cooked to a top secret family recipe) to 1939 established Notting Hill stalwart, Geales (with its a Noughties make-over by Mark Fuller, Oli Burgess and co) branching out into leafy Chelsea Green, we’re all hot for cod, skate, jellied eels and crispy Maris Piper! Worship Street

The Worship Street Whistling Shop is the second venture from Fluid Movement, the collective of molecular mixologists enthusiasts behind Marylebone’s Purl and promises a unique Victoriana-inspired underground bar in the heart of Shoreditch. The Worship Street Whistling Shop will be a twenty-first century update of the Victorian gin palace of the 1820’s. Using London’s most innovative cocktail era as inspiration, the bar will feature a seating area complete with a bespoke Victorian lamp post and original shop front windows leading to the Fluid Movement lab, where the team will research new drinks and distil their own scents and flavours. Da Polpo

Russell Norman and Richard Beatty’s Polpo chain is gaining momentum. Hot on the heels of Polpetto in August last year and then Spuntino this March comes news of the newest launch to date. The duo is set to open number four, da Polpo in June of this year. The menu overseen by group head chef Tom Oldroyd will feature a meatball section and a pizzetta offering too expanding on those tried and tested favourites from Polpo, Polpetto and Spuntino plus some brand new and exciting dishes as well. Good Godfrey’s

Bang in the middle of Aldwych in London’s theatre land comes the new Good Godfrey’s bar & lounge taking its name from Howard Godfrey, the celebrity bandleader of the ‘Waldorfians’, the Waldorf house band in the 1920’s. A household name, he made hundreds of radio appearances with hit records such as ‘In Heaven’ and ‘My Canary has Circles Under his Eyes’ and The Waldorf was the spot where London first learnt to tango at its famous Tango Teas. A striking bar features illuminated marble, chrome and granite elements with up lighting while decorative wallpaper has been added to the ceiling […]

The Zetter Townhouse

Clerkenwell’s Zetter is branching out with an entire townhouse across the cobbles of St John’s Square. The hotly anticipated new 13 bedroom Georgian hostelry and cocktail lounge looks just like a private home – albeit rather a posh one. We’re especially excited about the ground floor cocktail lounge as it’s an exciting collaboration between The Zetter and the creators of the award winning 69 Colebrooke Row. Number 69 is so tiny that fans of Tony Congliaro’s molecular mixology will be delighted to stretch their legs in a brand new venue. Stuffed full of oddities and curios, with an open fire […]

Century

Century, the Private Members Club beloved by Jennifer Aniston and Robbie Williams – the latter is one of its founding members – is celebrating its tenth anniversary this year and to mark this milestone birthday, Pierre and Kathy Condou who conceived and created the venue ub have given the place a full refurbishment and re-design. An integral part of the reboot is their brand new Century Brasserie, and better still, for the first time it will open its doors to the public so everyone can have the chance to experience one of Soho’s best kept secrets. To celebrate, the venue’s […]

Dorsia

South Kensington’s much loved Firehouse bar, restaurant and club has recently been taken over LVMH style and is due to relaunch as Dorsia on 25 May following a massive £2.4million refurbishment. Fans of Bret Easton Ellis’ American Psycho will doubtless recognise the name from the mythological destination resto in the book (and Christian Bale’s hang out in the movie adaptation) and we can certainly imagine a slew of goodlooking young bucks comparing business cards in the sophisticated Kensington location. The 300 capacity venue will comprise a members’ club, bar and restaurant and while it’s still under construction, the space promises […]

The Summerhouse

Making a reprise due to popular demand, Waterway’s pop-up little sister, The Summerhouse is back for a seven month run in Little Venice. The nautical themed restaurant is serving up a delicious seafood menu in a space reminiscent of a Hampton’s beach house. The Summerhouse’s light and airy décor is based on the large Long Island seafront houses where well-heeled New Yorkers retreat during the summer. The walls have a clean, whitewashed appearance offset by blue and white upholstery. The restaurant even has its own adjacent mooring space so river traffic can stop off and enjoy a leisurely lunch and […]

The Cube

Electrolux is more usually associated with dishwashers and fridges than fine dining but the brand has just launched The Electrolux Cube in Belgium’s capital Brussels, sitting atop the city’s Parc du Cinquantenaire. The first in a series of unique temporary dining concepts, it will be followed by two further Electrolux Cube restaurants popping up on landmark sites across Europe over the course of the year. Each Cube will offer a memorable dining experience for 18 guests per sitting and the transparent and semi-transparent structures will pop-up on monuments, buildings and even water platforms in Belgium, Italy, Russia, Switzerland and Sweden […]

Spuntino cntd.

Clever Russell Norman. Following on from the popularity of first venture, Polpo, he could well have allowed success to go to his head and either supersized Ramsay style or expanded into an ill-considered and uber-hastily conceived chain. But no. The former Caprice Holdings Ops Director has played a waiting game with his two ensuing ventures – Polpetto above the French House and more recently Spuntino, his diminutive ‘no phone no reservations’ Italo-US brand extension in Rupert Street – delaying opening until he found his perfect venues. So a new one-night-only Young and Foodish Spag-Wednesday Meatball Pop-Up is a fitting development. […]

Boulevard Brasserie

Situated in the heart of Covent Garden's Opera Quarter, Boulevard Brasserie is as an authentic Parisian brasserie as you could want this side of The Channel. Ideally located for Theatreland and the Covent Garden Opera House, this atmospheric little number has recently been taken over by Maxwell's Restaurant Group benefitting from a sympathetic refit but without losing any of its Gallic charm. It's a great place to go on a Friday night – when we visited it was merrily buzzing without being packed to the rafters – and the fact that it's spread over three floors (the basement cellars with […]

Capote y Toros

Abel Lusa’s Cambio de Tercio group is launching fourth venture, Capote y Toros on Old Brompton Road, a ham and sherry bar boasting the world’s most extensive sherry list of over 100 varieties. The venue is based on a neighbourhood joints in downtown Cádiz and following in the illustrious footsteps of famous watering holes such as Casa Manteca or La Venta de Vargas where legendary flamenco musician Camarón de la Isla began his career. Guests can sit at the bar or at one of the eight tables and feast on Iberico pork charcuterie from Spanish producer Sanchez Romero Carvajal or […]
