Cantinetta

Locanda Locatelli is certainly a hotbed for spawning new culinary talent. In July we reported on the opening of Tintello in Pimlico from Locanda alumni, Max and Federico Sali. Not only did they have the blessing of the entrepreneur and his wife Plaxy but even scored financial backing! And now chef Federico Turri who spent seven years working with Giorgio has joined forces with restaurateur Rebecca Mascarenhas to launch new restaurant and bar Cantinetta this month in Putney. Turri himself hails from a background of restaurateurs and his family ran a hotel and restaurant near Milan in northern Italy. Mascarenhas […]

Ora

If you’re not heading off to the sunnier climes of Thailand this Christmas, we’ve got the next best thing. Ora is a gem of a new and super stylish Thai restaurant on Little Portland Street tucked away from the throng of festive shoppers of Oxford Street. The restaurant’s 90 covers are spread over both banquettes and a central communal table seating 20 for the more sociably minded. The interior is all about sleek clean lines in a suitably zen-like shade of dove grey with flashes of hot pink and glass light installations running the length of the space. There’s also […]

Cassis

We may be more accustomed to Cassis popping up in our cocktails with a healthy measure of vodka but it’s also the name of a brand new restaurant that’s just launched in the Brompton Road on the former site of The Oratory. Cassis is the latest offering from restaurant entrepreneur Marlon Abela’s MARC group whose portfolio includes Uma, The Greenhouse and Mortons, the four floor extravaganza of a private members club in swanky Berkeley Square. On the other side of the pond there are the Michelin-starred A Voce Madison and A Voce Columbus plus and the newly opened Francois Payard […]

Sketch at the RA

To coincide with its GSK Contemporary exhibition 'Aware: Art Fashion Identity' which examines how we use our clothing to communicate who we are (or want to be) to the outside world, The Royal Academy is staging a fabulous cafe in conjunction with Pierre Gagnaire's Sketch restaurant. The Parisian themed pop-up features a stage set interior designed by Andres Ros of the Maison Beton collective who, inspired by SS 2011 catwalk collections has collaborated with jewellery designer Mawi, queen of sunnies Linda Farrow, artist Dinos Chapman and Harper's Bazaar Magazine. The resulting fusion of fashion, art and food is good enough to […]

No. 92

We’ve noticed there’s an over-riding theme to openings of late and we don't just mean the fad for naming a venue by its door number. We're not sure if it’s a measure of the recession or simply one of owners becoming increasingly savvy to market forces but it seems that there’s a move towards the pooling of resources. But either way, shared addresses – either by separate bar and restaurant offerings under the same ownership such Brenhan Magee’s Brasa and The Broadway Bar and Grill and Cigalon and Baranais or those who simply share a building such as The Chesterfield […]

Watatsumi

We’ll have to wait a bit longer before we can check out the eagerly awaited Corinthia Hotel but meanwhile, new Japanese restaurant, Watatsumi, situated in the neighbouring Club Quarters Hotel on Northumberland Avenue, has just opened for business. It takes its name from a mythological Japanese sea god, but although it boasts Nobu-trained executive chef, Peter Makohus heading up the kitchen, it promises to take us beyond sushi and sashimi – though there’s plenty of that as well so the less adventurous needn’t alarm themselves! The sushi bar offers all the classics from Sashimi through to Nigiri and Maki but […]

Cigalon

It might be surprising to learn, but Jamie Oliver’s new Barbecoa isn’t the only culinary new-comer to hit St Paul’s. The area has just welcomed the launch of Cigalon from Club Gascon alumni, Julien Carlong and Maxime Le Van. The restaurant takes its name from the eponymous chef protagonist of Marcel Pagnol’s 1935 film and is located in the former Hodgson’s Auction House on Chancery Lane. The kitchen is headed up by Carlon who was head chef at Comptoir Gascon for three years and his second in command is Le Van. The latter was only 23 years old when he […]

The Savoy Grill Opens

Today (29th November 2010) marks the opening of The Savoy Grill following the completion of the hotel's £220m renovation project. Under the auspices of Gordon Ramsay Holdings, Stuart Gillies and Andy Cook have created a classic French/British menu – think lobster thermidor and beef wellington. We are looking forward to taking a peak…apparently the hotel, grill and American bar have been restored to their former art deco glory. The Night Chauffeur

We love it when brands think outside the box with their marketing campaigns. Peroni’s La Dolce Vita collaboration with ‘it’ director Gabriele Muccino of Pursuit of Happyness fame imbued the beer with Italian sex appeal in spades and now Stella Artois’ brilliant new Night Chauffeur series is set to do the same with its 1960s Parisian glamour. Conceived to celebrate the launch of the brand’s new premium lager, Stella Artois Black, The Night Chauffeur is a unique immersive theatre experience run in conjunction with Felix Barrett’s edgy Punchdrunk theatre company. Customers buying the new lager from a range of venues […]
