Watatsumi

We’ll have to wait a bit longer before we can check out the eagerly awaited Corinthia Hotel but meanwhile, new Japanese restaurant, Watatsumi, situated in the neighbouring Club Quarters Hotel on Northumberland Avenue, has just opened for business. It takes its name from a mythological Japanese sea god, but although it boasts Nobu-trained executive chef, Peter Makohus heading up the kitchen, it promises to take us beyond sushi and sashimi – though there’s plenty of that as well so the less adventurous needn’t alarm themselves! The sushi bar offers all the classics from Sashimi through to Nigiri and Maki but […]

Interiors combine minimalist design with traditional Central Asian artefacts and motifs plus a bustling […]

Christmas at Alain Ducasse

A few years ago, someone decided to take a stand against the notoriously lacklustre Christmas cracker – after all, a paper hat can only have limited entertainment value. The result was a new market niche for the ultimate in luxury crackers, beautiful gilded creations that hide infinite possibilities for teeny tiny supergifts. In the case of masterchef Alain Ducasse, the crackers on offer at his three Michelin-starred restaurant at the London Dorchester are the hiding place for a range of his most coveted and well-guarded recipes, including his infamous Rhum Baba. Foodies won't be the only ones rejoicing, as three […]

The Bobbin

New addition to the Clapham scene is the midnight blue Bobbin pub from Alex Corbett and Jonathon Burford, the team behind Battersea’s The Lighthouse and The Roundhouse in Wandsworth. It’s hidden away from the main drag on Lillieshall Street a smart residential enclave of handsome Georgian houses. As cute as a button – or a bobbin for that matter – the cosy bar and restaurant areas see banquette seating upholstered in thick luxurious plaid and two roaring fires. Shelves are laden with board games and cookery books and colanders filled with giant seasonal vegetables make for an unusual touch. Additional […]

The Night Jar

The Nightjar is an independently owned 21st century speakeasy opening 19 November which is set to rejuvenate the Shoreditch scene. Taking its name from a nocturnal bird of elegant flight with a distinctive warble and more camouflage than an army surplus store, the bar and live music venue is East London’s new hidden gem that sings to its own tune. Its two connected spaces with capacity for 100 discerning drinkers promise no membership and no hype with all the glamour of an early 20th century cabaret venue decked out with subtle lighting, glinting brasses and mirrored friezes. There’s also talk […]

Brasa

It looks like restaurateur Brenhan Magee is intent on buying up the whole of Fulham Broadway. The former leading light of The Breakfast Group (Jerusalem and Salvador & Amanda) – before moving on to build and own Soho’s The Club Bar and Dining – successfully launched The Broadway Bar and Grill last month and is now opening new standalone restaurant, Brasa on the floor above. Brasa means live coal in Spanish and the venue will cook the mainstay of its dishes on an Asador Grill, imported from Spain’s Basque Mountain region. But although the culinary techniques may be exotic, the […]

North Road

René Redzepi, isn’t the only Dane in the restaurant world. Christoffer Hruskova has already made a name for himself on the London food scene with his innovative Fig restaurant in Islington and now he’s taking his menu to new Clerkenwell site, North Road on St John Street. Although his cuisine is firmly rooted in Scandinavia, ingredients are UK sourced from hand-dived scallops and langoustines from the Scottish coast, lamb from Cumbria and beef from Galloway. Christoffer involves himself in every step of the culinary process, picking elderberries which he then pickles, smoking bone marrow or foie gras and curing meats […]

The Night Chauffeur

We love it when brands think outside the box with their marketing campaigns. Peroni’s La Dolce Vita collaboration with ‘it’ director Gabriele Muccino of Pursuit of Happyness fame imbued the beer with Italian sex appeal in spades and now Stella Artois’ brilliant new Night Chauffeur series is set to do the same with its 1960s Parisian glamour. Conceived to celebrate the launch of the brand’s new premium lager, Stella Artois Black, The Night Chauffeur is a unique immersive theatre experience run in conjunction with Felix Barrett’s edgy Punchdrunk theatre company. Customers buying the new lager from a range of venues […]
