Studio East

We’ve had Pierre Koffman on Selfridges rooftop and Frank’s Campari Bar atop a rather more urban Peckham multi-storey, but Studio East Dining, Carmody Groarks’ collaboration with Pablo Flack and David Waddington of Bristrotheque fame, tops the lot with its breathtaking 360 degree views of the capital. The temporary dining room is perched 34m above ground atop what will eventually be floor nine of the multi-storey car park for Westfield Stratford City – Europe’s largest shopping centre. Flack dubs it “The Rolls Royce of pop-ups,” and let’s face it, he should know. In addition to the East End hub that is […]

Playtime & London Wall

Two very different new cultural launches see Playtime bar, art installation and performance space on Islington Green and Ben and Hugo Warner’s London Wall Bar & Kitchen within the brand new Museum of London. Playtime is testament to the fact that East London’s bar-meets-art scene is spreading its wings into the rest of the capital and the recent launch featured a performance from hula-hoop artist extraordinaire, Marawa The Amazing. The two-storey venue is working with an ongoing rostrum of artists to showcase a cutting edge and eclectic line-up of DJ’s, musicians and performers. Every four months will see a new […]

28-50

Xavier Rousset and Agnar Sverrission, behind the Michelin-starred Texture, have turned their focus to wine with the launch of 28-50 Wine Workshop & Kitchen, opening this month in the City’s Fetter Lane. In an area long known for super exclusive restaurants or wine bars where food is but an afterthought, the new venture offers a happy medium: an exceptional and reasonably prices variety of wines with the addition of simple, classic French food. Both are served in a relaxed environment with brick walls and stripped wooden floors. The name 28-50 is based on the latitudes in which most of the […]

Sanderson Football Widows

While the capital's men folk are hogging the plasma or holed up in the pub for the duration of the World Cup, ladies can take refuge in the rather more stylish surroundings of The Sanderson Hotel. While they're drinking enough beer to float a small army of rubber ducks, we will be quaffing Champagne. Football widows can drown their sorrows in the hotel's new Champagne tasting menu, served at the venue's rather chic al fresco terrace without a giant screen in sight! Each night that England is playing, there wil be a Champagne dinner that is strictly a ball free zone and guests […]

Plot to sell The Ritz

A plot to sell the Ritz Hotel in London was a "simple but well-targeted and ambitious scam", a court has heard. Conn Farrell, 57, Patrick Dolan, 68, and Anthony Lee, 49, are accused of trying to sell the landmark hotel in Piccadilly for £250m. The men "sucked in" their carefully chosen victims by offering them false promises of a deal described as "complete fantasy", Southwark Crown Court was told. All three deny conspiracy to defraud. Mr Dolan, of Philip Lane, Tottenham, Mr Farrell, of Cambridge Road, Aldershot, Hampshire, and Mr Lee, of Broad Lane, Goole, East Yorkshire, are accused of defrauding Terence […]

Food Takes Centre Stage

This month sees two food focused relaunches. Notting Hill’s The Lonsdale is being reborn as The Lonsdale Bar and Restaurant – a brand new W8 steakhouse presided over by head chef, Jason Wallis and then, although it launched only last year, roaring 20s speakeasy, Proud Cabaret has just emerged from an extensive overhaul as a fully fledged City restaurant. Hailing from Hawksmoor and The Palm, Jason Wallis has a great track record as a perfectionist, forging relationships with master butchers to ensure any meat he touches is of the highest standard and has, unsurprisingly, chosen free range beef cuts from […]

French Fancy

Alexis Gauthier is finally having his moment. The former chef patron of the Michelin-starred Roussillon has just opened his own eponymous restaurant in the Georgian Soho townhouse previously home to Richard Corrigan’s Lindsay House. With a pedigree extending far beyond his 12 year stint in Pimlico, he has also worked at Monaco’s Hotel de Paris under Alain Ducasse and consulted for the Mark Birley Group. Gauthier’s cuisine is famed for its simplicity and he sets out to enhance the natural flavour of the main ingredient, surprisingly, the vegetable! Three menus options will be available: a set lunch or pre-theatre menu, […]
