The Cuckoo Club

Fashions regarding clubs appear to change more frequently than Michael Jackson altered his face; some endure, while others fade away, never to be heard of again. Remember Hedges and Butler, that vast warren of underground tunnels that resembled home for the Addams Family and was billed as the club that wasn’t a club? The billing is now sadly apt, as the club appears to be no more. Prior to that, it was all about Chelsea and South Ken. The fact that Boujis had essentially been granted a Royal warrant, implied that if an establishment wasn’t in SW3 or SW7, it […]

Dorchester Spa

The hugely anticipated Dorchester Spa has finally reopened and it's well worth the wait. Inspired by 1930s art deco, the spa has nine sound proof treatment rooms, two double suites, a mani-pedi suite, as well as a relaxation room that you'll never want to leave. Upon entering the reception, it's as if you've reached arcadia, with its glamorous and completely white interior it manages to remain natural and pure, yet still impossibly stylish. With an impressive list of treatments it's difficult to know which one your body craves more. I had the rose cocoon wrap which exfoliates,  tones and then moisturises […]

Embargo 59 Launch

An old friend with a new look. Last Thursday (25th June) all of Chelsea's finest was on show at the launch party of the infamous Kings Road hangout Embargo. Cocktails were sipped and canapes nibbled as everyone enjoyed the evenings good weather out on the stunning new roof terrace listening to a live cuban band.  The night went on into the early hours of the morning as guests, that included Holly Branson and Chelsy Davy, danced on the bright dance floor or chatted on the comfortable seats in the VIP lounge. Embargo has been a favourite venue with the Chelsea set for […]

Hold the Front Page

Today’s news may well be tomorrow’s fish and chips but at Lutyens it’s also tomorrow’s crustacea! Monday June 29th saw the opening of the new restaurant du jour in the former Reuters building on Fleet Street, erstwhile home of London’s newspaper industry. Coming hot on the heels of Boundary and Albion, Lutyens is the brand new edition to the Prescott & Conran stable. Seasoned newshounds will no doubt realize that the establishment takes its curious sounding name from Sir Edwin Lutyens – arguably the most distinguished British architect of the first half of the Twentieth century – who designed the […]

Sex, Drugs & Rolls

If music be the food of love then Horse Meat Disco for carnivores and The Black Eyed Peas or Peaches for vegetarians is what you'd usually expect to sustain you through the summer round of music festivals. It’s normally hard enough to get a decent cappuccino beyond the M25, (skinny and dry with an extra shot if you're asking) but this summer's festival foodie line up reads like a flyer for Taste of London on tour. Pop up restaurants are popping up everywhere like pop up tents in the mud. In addition to the acts gracing the stages at this […]

A return to glory

Anyone can eat out these days, and we do – frequently! In fact with the pace of London life rivalling that of NYC, we’re becoming increasingly New York in our eating habits too and just like Sarah Jessica Parker’s SATC alter ego, Carrie Bradshaw, we’re more likely to use our ovens as extra wardrobe space as opposed to actual cooking. But as restaurants come and go there still remain those stalwarts of the London landscape where dining is still an experience guaranteed to excite even the most jaded of palates. Having undergone a sympathetic interior restoration, The Criterion has recently […]

London Pride

Until recently, our city was more famous for spawning bars than breweries but now with three new ventures within the M25, we’re more than just a capital of consumption. Sambrook's Brewery, in Battersea Square, a short hop from the now defunct Young’s, was set up by ex accountant, Devon boy and ale enthusiast, Duncan Sambrook and his partner in crime, David Walsh. The boys started production of their Wandle session ale at the end of last year. The feel is a micro brewery that's been fed some magic beans and gone postal but with over 30 of the capital’s coolest […]

Alto Opens

There is simply no let-up in the number of hot new London venues springing up in place of their now retired predecessors. The latest is named Alto, which takes the former site of Umbaba. A stylish premise of Art Nouveau inspiration and elegant decadence, the venue will be opening this June for late evenings, and from September will be opening earlier, offering live jazz and a cool, relaxing atmosphere. Located on Ganton Street, the 500 capacity lounge and nightclub will be reminiscent of a "Grand Palais" drawing room, split into various areas inspired by celebrated artists and designers of the […]

What lies beneath …

Bermondsey’s Fashion & Textile Museum has just launched it’s brand new exhibiton: Undercover – The Evolution of Underwear. The exhibition tracks the progress of our smalls from the first ever patented bra designed by Mme Gaches-Sarraute in 1915 right through the ages, taking in the bandeau garments worn by 1920s flappers, the Lana Turner 'sweater girl' trend of the 30s, the bullet bras worn by 1950s Hollywood starlets and, of course, the 90s Wondabra with all it’s “Hello boys” connotations. There’s a section dedicated to modern day versions as well with covetous creations by La Perla, celebrity endorsed ranges by […]
