Clubs look Overseas

To combat the collapse of the pound private member’s clubs are looking overseas to secure membership in 2009. Following the influx of Europeans travelling to the UK taking advantage of the strength of the Euro against the pound it appears that private member’s clubs are expanding their membership offers in order to keep themselves afloat. One Alfred Place is one private member’s club leading the way: ‘Since the market point has weakened, we’ve had a steady increase in overseas enquiries and we expect this to grow throughout 2009,’ says owner Rob Shreeve. The club provides a discrete and luxurious location […]

Paper

One of London’s hottest clubs will be bowing out on the brink of 2009 – following in the footsteps of Boombox, which held its huge farewell party last NYE, Paper is set to close for good after ringing in the new year. Paper is now a grand three years old, the creation of the team behind Grill Room who brought fashionable life back to the cellars of the Cafe Royale. Comprised of a restaurant, an upstairs bar, Glass, which features fine cocktails and bar food, and the main downstairs club, the 400 capacity venue has been host to a large […]

Brazillian Chic

Inspired by two very different cultures, Sushinho is an exciting new destination restaurant that opens on The King’s Road, Chelsea, on 12th December. Sushinho mixes Brazilian chic with the practicality and efficiency of Japan. The opening of Sushinho could not be more timely; for 2008 marks the centenary of the arrival of the first Japanese immigrants in Brazil. Numbering an estimated 1.5 million, there are now more people of Japanese descent in Brazil than anywhere in the world outside of Japan itself. The 'usual suspects' of sushi and sashimi are very much in evidence, alongside dishes infused with Brazilian/South American […]

Beach Blanket Babylon

Some men (lets start on a traditional and somewhat sexist note) choose to take a first date to a flashy, overpriced venue; perhaps a hotel bar, a staggeringly expensive restaurant possibly filled with bankers, their dates and all of their respective pinstriped friends. While impressive this is not always the ideal way to romance your chosen paramour. Beach Blanket Babylon, although ostentatious in dcor, is a fantastical place full of mysterious passages and dark nooks to seduce your date. And it is worth the money. The roaring lions head, as you walk in, is magnificent; the lighting emitted from the […]

"How do you have a party like this in these economic times?" It was a much-asked question for Colin Cowie, the event planner behind the biggest, most expensive launch party of recent years. Miss Minogue performed at the launch, for a rumoured fee of £1.5 million, whilst guests feasted on Middle Eastern mezze accompanied by flowing Veuve Clicquot. Gilgamesh

Trying to find a different night out in London can be pretty challenging.  Every restaurant seems to blend into another and the rise in the popular Pan Asian cuisine such as, the impeccable head-girl of restaurants E and O, proves difficult for the humbler sorts to hold their own against However, hidden incredibly well in the stable yard of Camden is something that you definitely won’t be expecting on a Monday night.  Gilgamesh is a mix between a Buddha bar chain and a leisure centre.  Upon arrival you go straight upstairs by escalators and enter a movie set of the […]
