What Recession ?

While economists may be preaching doom and gloom to anyone who will listen, there is one area of retail bucking the trend and in a big way and against all odds is flying proudly in the face of recession. A report published in the September issue of Harden’s London Restaurants highlights the fact that the last 12 months have seen the lowest rate of restaurant closures in the capital since 2000 – just 64 in total. It also finds that openings are up on last year – to a staggering 121 – with an array of fabulous restaurants which all […]

Planes & Trains

Let’s face it, we’re pretty spoiled for choice with London’s eateries but unless you turn left when you board a flight, commandeer and entire train like the queen complete with private chef or make your annual pilgrimage to the West Country in a stretch limo, it’s unlikely you’ll get on-board sustenance to send a postcard home about. However, London’s finest are now venturing into territories previously unknown – airport terminals, stations and even motorway service stations – so there’s no excuse not to start you holiday in style and stave off the munchies before you depart or even en route. […]

Cut loose at Cable

Back in the day of smiley faced acid house parties, Danny Rampling’s London Bridge Shoom Club was the destination for metropolis-bound ravers whose morning milk was the closest they fancied getting to a cow-pat. But fast forward 20 years of post rave and nu-wave and the Noughties club kids are reclaiming Southwark as their manor once more. Old railway arches lend themselves perfectly to ‘underground’ dance venues – just look at Vauxhall, Clerkenwell and Shoreditch – but until May of this year and the emergence of new superclub, Cable, Bermondsey Street was more of a bridge and tunnel pit-stop than […]

This brand new white-canvas events space just seconds from Leicester Square, provides a key service for companies and individuals looking for something more than simply another shop front or bar. Reading Matters

Electronic books downloaded on our i-phones may indeed be the future but Londoners are going retro with a fashionable resurgence in the written word. From Celia Birtwell designed book jackets to Angela Hill's pop-up designer book shop (until 29th Aug) in the hip St Martin's Lane Hotel, bookworms have never been chicer. Literary love-ins are even fusing with more traditional evening pursuits and events such as cult author, Patrick Neate’s Bookslam at Notting Hill's Tabernacle –rumoured to have Generation X-er, Douglas Coupland coming down in September – are gaining momentum. Book clubs too are shedding their spoddy image with restaurants […]

Make love to that lens

Roll up for celebrity photographer, Rankin's most ambitious exhibition to date, showing at East London’s hip Truman Brewery until September 18th. His first ever UK retrospective, this museum-scale exhibition covers a massive 22,000 square foot, and showcases over 600 diverse images taken from his archives. Rankin first came to prominence in the mid-nineties, when he co-founded the cult magazine Dazed & Confused with Jefferson Hack and quickly established himself shooting his Brit-scene contemporaries from Pulp and Blur to Madonna, Kylie, Kate Moss and even the Queen. His images break through the facade of his subjects' public persona and seek to […]

Life Through a Lens

They say that everyone gets their 15 minutes of fame but selected Londoners are now getting a whopping 23 days of celebrity at the Getty Images Gallery. A brand new exhibition entitled, Londoners Through a Lens, opens at the Gallery on August 14th through September 5th. Following on from last year’s critically acclaimed show, London Through a Lens, which brought us images of our city’s landmarks, this exhibition focuses on the people of London, from the film stars such as Michael Caine and Audrey Hepburn to the street vendors that make our city great. The exhibition features a wide-ranging and […]

Peckham prodigy

Earlier this year, Deptford was touted by Italian Vogue as the travel destination du jour so Frank's Campari Bar and Café, the new pop-up dining concept situated atop a multi-storey car park in Peckham sits in pretty illustrious company! Edgy fashion mavens are flocking in their droves to the new venue – even though the lift stops at floor six meaning they have to traverse the final stretch on foot! The tenth floor terrace is part pop-up café part art installation – the red tarpaulin-covered wooden structure is designed by Antony Gormley's daughter Paloma – and sits alongside Bold Tendencies […]

A Mint of a Curry

Since it opened six years ago, Mint Leaf has been quietly building a name for itself as one of London’s poshest purveyors of Indian cuisine – first of all in the West End and then in the City with the launch of second branch, Mint Leaf Lounge. Only the best is good enough for owner, and ex steel magnate, Dinu Bhattessa, who spent two years finding the perfect sites. Both restaurants are situated in grand old converted banks – Barclays in Suffolk Place and the former Natwest building in Angel Court, Lothbury – sumptuous affairs, the architecture lending itself perfectly […]

Hold the Front Page

Today’s news may well be tomorrow’s fish and chips but at Lutyens it’s also tomorrow’s crustacea! Monday June 29th saw the opening of the new restaurant du jour in the former Reuters building on Fleet Street, erstwhile home of London’s newspaper industry. Coming hot on the heels of Boundary and Albion, Lutyens is the brand new edition to the Prescott & Conran stable. Seasoned newshounds will no doubt realize that the establishment takes its curious sounding name from Sir Edwin Lutyens – arguably the most distinguished British architect of the first half of the Twentieth century – who designed the […]

Room with a view

Altitude, London’s premier event space, first took up its vertiginous residence at the very top of Westminster’s iconic Millbank Tower back in September 2007. The following year, Mayor Boris Johnson launched the “Altitude 360° Concept” and unveiled ambitious plans to make the venue even more spectacular with an entire extra floor to accommodate up to 600 guests and providing 360° views across the capital! And now that twinkle in an architect’s eye has become a breathtaking reality and the venue was chosen to host the star-studded launch of Coutts’ London Jewellery Week at the beginning of June this year. An […]
