It’s no secret that Londoners love all things artisanal and independent so when this extends to something that’s not a coffee shop or deli, we’re all ears: enter award-winning gin, Sipsmith. Sipsmith itself is nothing new – established in 2009, it is one of only four gin distilleries operating in London. A bit of a surprise when you consider the historical relationship of London and gin – back in the 18th century gin was considered safer to drink than water. Gin consumption increased rapidly in the early 1700s as a direct result of growing incomes but it got so out […]
You might not have heard of Alex Szrok, Tom Richardson Hill and Lucas Mathiszig-Lee but chances are if you’re into good quality meat or you visit Broadway Market then you’ll have heard of Hill & Szrok Master Butcher and Cookshop. Well this week they are set to open Hill & Szrok Public House over on Old Street. With an emphasis on maximum quality and minimal fuss the focus of the pub will be slow grown, free range and sustainable English meat, all of which will arrive whole for Tom (the butcher) and his team to cut down. If you’re squeamish you […]
We’re all aspiring cooks these days aren’t we? Nailing (or in our case failing) recipes from Pinterest, whipping up creations we’ve seen on Instagram and buying cookbook after cookbook – mainly to look at the photographs, but still, we have them and that’s the important part. However if you need a little helping hand in the kitchen or if you’re already a culinary genius and want to try something new then you are in luck. Party people and cocktail connoisseurs Bourne & Hollingsworth are opening their cookery school, B & H Kitchen at the top of their Bourne & Hollingsworth […]
For the English, breakfast is a patriotic affair – there’s a reason the beloved fry-up is called a ‘Full English’ and not just a ‘Full Breakfast’. Whether fuelling a busy day ahead or an attempt to rid you of your hangover, there’s not much the humble fried egg/bacon/beans combo can’t fix. In celebration of Breakfast Week (24th-30th January), we have rounded up London’s best breakfasts; from the iconic greasy spoon to the civilised New York-style brasserie, we have it covered. And, of course, we’ve included a few Antipodean brunches for those of us who are late-risers – or like to think […]
Our favourite pick me up between breakfast and lunch is finally making its way to OXO as they launch a weekend brunch menu for the first time in the Brasserie. The new menu will see a London make over given to the English breakfast with dishes like sautéed mushrooms on toast with a soft boiled egg; Severn & Wye’s smoked salmon served with potato rösti and crème fraiche; as well as corned beef hash, eggs royale, eggs Florentine and eggs benedict – all made with the best ingredients from award-winning local producers. What brunch would be complete without alcohol? OXO’s […]
London burger giants, Patty & Bun, are soon to be back with their fourth restaurant and this time they are heading to the old Stockpot site on Old Compton Street. Their largest site yet, the restaurant will have 55 covers and will be split over two floors. In the basement will sit an open kitchen and space for 20 diners so they can watch their burgers being flipped. It’s also available for private hire…oh hello birthday burger parties. In a Patty & Bun first they’ll also be building a little bar so that they can serve up cocktails, because burgers […]
If it was summer we’d be out every evening sipping sundowners till, well, the sun goes down. But since we’re still in January and it still gets dark long before we leave the office, our nights tend to be cut rather short. Lack of sunlight hours aside, an evening well spent makes the week feel so much longer and more fulfilled. Combine this potential sense of achievement with the chance to learn something new – a series of talks, Q&As and masterclasses across 3 dates in late January/early February, by which time your other resolutions may have fizzled out. Each […]
Going to the cinema it’s a classic date, albeit a little clichéd, unless that is you’re going to the cinema in a hotel and you’re drinking Champagne at the same time. The popular Film & Fizz series is returning to One Aldwych on Fridays and Saturdays, this time in partnership with Curzon Cinema meaning that guests can expect to watch films, some still on general release, from the comfort of the hotel’s 30-seat screening room and with a glass of Lallier Grande Réserve Champagne – beats the supersized Diet Coke. Films include Joy, Leonardo DiCaprio’s latest, The Revenant and Youth […]
Whether you’re reclaiming your lunch break and looking for quick dine-in options at lunchtime, or you’re a freelancer hot-desker after a spot to pitch up with the laptop and eat at the same time, we thought we’d round-up our top working lunch spots to tick the boxes for you.
If you normally leave a restaurant uncomfortably full, The Opera Tavern are giving you a rare opportunity to feel a different type of full… full of culture. To celebrate the London theatre debut of Ernest Hemingway’s The Fifth Column, Opera Tavern are hosting a one-off lunch – and what better place than the restaurant in the heart of theatre land. The bar-with-food specialises in tapas, and after a facelift a couple of years ago has drifted a bit from the ‘tavern’ in it’s title. This is no bad thing; the food is great. The lunch is celebrating Hemingway’s story of […]
