Shuang Shuang To Open

Let’s start the morning with a little history lesson. Did you know that the humble dish, hot pot has over a 1000 years history in China? It’s believe that it originated in Mongolia before spreading to China during the Tang Dynasty, and it has now found itself in Chinatown on the corner of Shaftesbury Avenue and Wardour Street. Shuang Shuang, which opens in January, is the work of Fan Sundravorakul who ran a collection of restaurants in Thailand before moving to London. Occupying an Old Victorian building and split across two floors it is London’s first specialist hot pot restaurant. […]

What to Look Out for in 2016

2015 has been a busy one and 2016 looks set to be equally as exciting, food-wise. At some points there seemed to be dozens of new openings each week but as always we kept you in the loop with news of all the hottest launches before the first customers even picked up their knife and fork. 2016 will see the rebirth of the humble kebab. Le Bab promises to change any preconceptions about greasy kebab houses when it opens a permanent residency in Carnaby Street’s ever-foodie Kingly Court. Imagine free range chicken Shawarma, roe deer shish and BBQ paneer kebabs […]

The Piano Works NYE Party

We’ve already done guides to the best places to head for New Year’s Eve feasts and parties but if you’re still stuck for ideas then here’s another to consider… The Piano Works in Farringdon is the place for civilised live music and a late night – normally the two don’t mix so well but here they do, and not only that but an ensemble of two grand pianos, drums, guitar, horn and backing singers perform nothing but songs requested by the audience, all night long. A refreshing change from DJs who glare as you request Justin Bieber for the forth […]

Where to Recover on New Year’s Day

We’re guessing that you tend to spend New Year’s Day feeling sorry for yourself, regretting the final tequila shot and espresso Martini you didn’t need the night before, and most probably not venturing too far from your duvet (are you a bed or sofa snuggler?). But here’s a crazy thought – don’t! Head out and cure that headache with a hair-of-the-dog treatment over brunch, lunch or New Year’s Day dinner! Here’s our top five:

Searcys afternoon tea review – what we thought

The Gherkin has been going for a while now and yet somehow I never managed to get myself in gear and make it over; well all that changed recently with the launch of their Christmas afternoon tea in Searcys. Located at the very top of the building, I had some brief vertigo as the dome of glass surrounds you giving you full viewing access. The inside was supposed to have been transformed into a winter wonderland, akin to a snow globe, but besides from a couple of Christmas trees and some pretty table ornaments, it looked much like normal restaurant – […]

Festive Brunch at Tom’s Kitchen

If the abundance of festive dinners in London don’t take your fancy and you’re one of those people who saves turkey for The Big Day itself, Tom’s Kitchen have thought of you with their latest offering; a big old festive brunch. Not every dish is strictly festive so don’t anticipate cranberries on your porridge and sprouts on your benedict. Instead, expect an extra special spin on our midday favourites; the humble but ever-appetising benedict has been given two new leases of life. The first is Cornish lobster and crab benedict with chilli and coriander hollandaise and the second, with duck […]

First Aid Box Opens

We all know that drinking whisky is supposed to help a cold and that a G&T is a really good way to cure a headache (if it’s of the hangover variety of course). Ok, it might not be quite what the doctor orders but this certainly is. Opening on Friday is First Aid Box, a new bar in Herne Hill from the duo behind drinks consultancy Salts of the Earth and Brixton bar, Shrub & Shutter – Chris Edwards and Dave Tregenza. Throughout the day they’ll be serving up Alchemy coffee and fresh juice and come the evening they’ll be […]

Brindisa’s Calçotada Celebrations

If you know what Calçotada is then we’re very impressed. We’ve got to say we had no idea but extensive professional research means we can enlighten you too; the calçotada is a Catalan winter food festival celebrating the harvest of calçot (giant spring onions). A festival involving food, we’re interested. A good old Spanish excuse to eat, drink and celebrate with friends, Calçotada tends to get messy. Giant spring onions are chargrilled and dipped in Romesco sauce and along with red wine, poured into guests mouths from a height – cue laughter and messy faces. Such an authentic celebration can […]

Boxing Night Party at BL-NK

Boxing Day is almost as good as Christmas Day itself. The stresses of maintaining your best ‘gift-face’ when opening presents is behind you, awkward reunions with old Aunt Linda are done and there are enough leftovers to provide turkey soup and turkey curry for weeks to come. After 48 hours of family duties we think it’s acceptable to let your hair down. For Boxing night only, Creche are returning to BL-NK, the venue on Curtain Road, joined by DJs Alexis Raphael, Cozzy D and Johnny Mikes (bonus points if you know all 3). The Chrimbo Limbo (those days between Christmas […]

Festive afternoon tea at the Playboy Club

Combining two of our favourite things with Christmas and afternoon tea, is the festive themed tea inspired by the Playboy Club’s new “Around the World” cocktail menu, and Salvatore “The Maestro” Calabrese’s globetrotting adventures. Salvatore’s Bar is situated inside one of our favourite London venues, the Playboy Club, which oozes old school glamour and sophistication and we love any excuse to pop down. The suitably festive and boozy afternoon tea offers a selection of traditional gourmet sandwiches like a delicious egg cress sandwich, made more interesting with a touch of garlic, and smoked salmon blinis – vegetarian options instead of […]
