Daawat Review – What We Thought

New? Daawat is well established but had a make-over last year to freshen up its look. Where? Strand Palace Hotel, 372 Strand, WC2R 0JJ, www.strandpalacehotel.co.uk On the menu: We were there to try out the new summer menu which featured items from the Tandoori mixed grill, sea bass with traditional Keralan flavours and classic chicken tikka masala. First Impressions: I’ve been to Daawat before and was eager to return, situated in Strand Palace hotel, the restaurant was already quite busy when we arrived – I assumed at least some of them must have been staying at the hotel. The Look: It has a modern, clean […]

100 Wardour Street Review – What We Thought

New? 100 Wardour Street opened with a bang back at the start of this year on the site of the former legendary Marquee Club, which then became Mezzo and most recently Floridita, which burnt down last year. Where? 100 Wardour Street, Soho, W1F 0TN, www.100wardourst.com On the Menu: Described as a Mediterranean menu, it differs upstairs and downstairs but in the restaurant (downstairs) where we sat, it is split into robata, raw, signatures and fish, salad, meat, which come to the table tapas-style as and when they are ready. There is also a snappy pre-theatre menu, more casual bar and lounge […]

Breakfast at Albion Clerkenwell Review – What We Thought

New? Albion opened its doors in Shoreditch in 2009 and has since opened in three more locations. Albion Clerkenwell is the largest of the restaurants with an even bigger menu. Where? 63 Clerkenwell Road, Clerkenwell, EC1M 5NP www.albion-uk.london On the Menu: This menu is quintessentially British, especially the breakfast menu: beans on toast, hollandaise, porridge, baps, Marmite – you name it. Divided up into sections of how each dish is prepared, choose from hot, on toast, baps, eggs, and my favourite, interlopers, which included avocado and poached eggs on toast or the hangover recovery sandwich. There is also an option to order from The Bakery, an in-house bakery […]

Rawligion Review – What We Thought

New? It opened in June 2016 with aims to expand next year. Where? 3 Tottenham Street, Fitzrovia, W1T 2AF www.rawligion.co.uk On the menu: The menu is plant-based offering a selection of juices/smoothies and raw dishes, not completely vegan as the venue doesn’t carry the same ethos that goes with a vegan diet – honey is used in some of their raw chocolates for example. First Impressions: It was quiet when we arrived but curiosity and the lure of free juice samples slowly got people in and by the time we left there was a steady stream of people although they seemed more interested in […]

Patara Hampstead Review – What We Thought

New? It opened in April 2016 making it the 6th venue for Patara, the first of which opened in London over 25 years ago. Where? 82 Hampstead High Street, Hampstead, NW3 1RE www.pataralondon.com On the menu: All of the chefs have been trained in Thailand so you can expect authentic Thai classics such spiced fish cakes and prawn tom yum. Some of the dishes have been tweaked slightly to appeal to a sophisticated European palette so you can also get prawn-pork dumplings with salmon roe and caviar and handcrafted lilac dumplings with caramelised chicken and peanut. First Impressions: I was greeted by […]

The Mandeville Review – What We Thought

You might remember that earlier this year we told you about the Riviera coming to Marylebone in the form of Christian Lacroix taking over the fifth floor of The Mandeville hotel. Four rooms each telling a different story, drawing on inspiration from the ladies who graced Jean Cocteau’s famous Santo Sospir villa and the likes of Grace Kelly’s classic film ‘To Catch a Thief’. Each room is completely unique but all use the finest fabrics and wallpapers from Christian Lacroix (under the creative direction of Sacha Walckhoff) collaboration with the Designers Guild. New? Relatively – the Christian Lacroix takeover of the […]

Valle Dell’ Erica Hotel – What We Thought

I know what you’re thinking as you read this review, sat at your desk as your boss sends you yet another ‘high importance’ email. You’re thinking wouldn’t it be great if you could go somewhere where the simple things in life remain just that, without all the complexities of city living? Somewhere where you can watch the sunset without electricity pylons splitting it in two, a place where the water is so transparent that Evian’s clearest would find it hard to compete, and a place where ‘rush hour’ doesn’t exist. Well, I didn’t know such a place could exist either, […]

Hatchetts Review – What We Thought

New?  Whilst the restaurant only opened earlier this month, it takes its name from Hatchett’s Hotel and White Horse Cellar Piccadilly which has been a firm favourite throughout history as a place to meet and have a drink or two. Frequented by Dickens and Edward Moggs it’s also seen the likes of The Rolling Stones, Shirley Bassey and The Beatles through its doors. Where?  5 White Horse Street, Mayfair, W1J 7LQ, www.hatchetts.london On the menu: Created by Head Chef, Andrew Evans who has worked alongside some of London’s most famous chefs including Angela Hartnett, Mark Hix, Gordon Ramsay, Marcus Wareing […]

New? Gaucho was founded in 1976 with the original restaurant in Amsterdam. The first UK restaurant was opened on Swallow Street (Piccadilly) in 1994 and, fast forward a few years, there are now 14 UK sites, including Manchester and Leeds as well as restaurants in Dubai, Hong Kong and Buenos Aires. Where? 60A Charlotte Street, Fitzrovia, W1T 2NU www.gauchorestaurants.com for bookings elli.sallis@gauchorestaurants.com On the Menu: Steak and red wine. Organic Argentinian Aberdeen-Angus steak to be precise, cooked on an open flame for the most authentic taste and sourced from the fertile grasslands of the Pampas. Impressively, the wine collection is not only exclusively Argentinian – all but 10 bottles […]
