Mabel’s: New to Covent Garden

New to Maiden Lane is Mabel’s an all –day dining, drinking and dancing venue. Sat just over the road from the Porterhouse, the first thing to say about Mabel’s that for Covent Garden where restaurants and bars vying for space and attention is that not only is it understated but it’s also pretty darn big. A simple black and white exterior gives way to a bar, restaurant, and a further downstairs bar that becomes a club on Thursdays through to Saturday.  Walls which are various colours are adorned with mirrors,  Victorian –esque images, bookcases and a chandelier hangs from the […]

Sunday Lunch at The Dolls House

What happens when you take a permanent marker and get to work illustrating the walls of a three storey Victorian town house in Islington? Well you get The Dolls House. Currently owned by Adam Towner and Katy Gray Rosewarne the venue is stripped back, minimalistic but with an air of grandeur – chandeliers, gold topped tables, exposed walls and large mirrors bouncing light around the room. Downstairs you’ll find The Parlour which is a the bar and upstairs houses the two function rooms; The Library and The Drawing Room and at the top is The Ballroom which is the restaurant […]

Wahaca Review – what we thought

Wahaca and Thomisna Miers has brought Mexican food to London in a way that no other restaurant has and throughout 2015 they are inviting the crème de la crème of the Mexican cooking scene to the original Covent Garden for a series of supper clubs to showcase the huge diversity of flavours in Mexico – it’s not all tacos and burritos. Currently they are hosting an exclusive Oaxacan regional menu created by Alejandro Ruiz, the owner and head chef of the beautiful Casa Oaxaca restaurant in his home region, and here is a fact for you Wahaca is the phonetic […]

Greyhound on the Test Restaurant Review

Head chef at the Greyhound on the Test, Alan Haughie, learned his craft as an apprentice under Anton Edelman at the Savoy from 2002-2004 and went on to continue working with him at the Brasserie St Quentin, by Harrods on Brompton Road. After a brief stint abroad he returned to London before finding his calling in Stockbridge, serving great British food from locally produced sources. We happily settled into the cosy and romantically lit restaurant in the Greyhound on the Test, enjoying the rustic surroundings before getting on with ordering our food. The starter of Gazpacho, a dish purposefully served […]

Bo Drake Review

Korean and Mexican fusion cuisine? Surely not we thought… polar opposite countries, a mix like that wouldn’t work. How wrong we were! The two week old ‘Bo Drake’, hidden away in the heart of stylish Soho, is something quite different. What can you expect…well a Korean/Mexican BBQ, that’s what and a delicious, fun and vibrant one at that. Never been to one before? No neither had we but being a night of ‘Firsts’ we gamefully accepted the outlandish yet delicious cherry pink Soju de la Vida Slushie. The cocktail was injected with the Korean spirit Soju and naughty Mexico’s equivalent Mezcal, […]

Scoff & Banter

First of all let’s start off with what a great a name for a British restaurant Scoff & Banter is and secondly let’s appreciate their aim – they say they’re there for us when silver service and tiny tasting menus are too much, but when eating with our hands is too little. A middle option, good, robust, no nonsense British eating. There are several around the capital but we headed to the one on Gloucester Road which is part of the Radisson Blu  Edwardian Vanderbilt hotel and has recently been refurbished with reclaimed furniture, a mix of wooden and metal […]
