The Black Dog Review

By all appearances The Black Dog in Vauxhall looks like any other pub, even inside it rocks a kind of shabby chic design with tables crammed just a little too tightly together but this is where the drawbacks end. It is always a sign of a confident kitchen team when the kitchen is open plan, as you can combine a perfect opportunity to snoop on the cleanliness and preparation of your food with a pre-meal show. They should be confident as the food, although simple, is surprisingly good with fresh flavours coming through easily and as they say, if it […]

The Colour Palate Review

On Wednesday The Handbook headed down to the launch of new Marylebone venue, Carousel, and Art of Dining’s latest pop-up experience The Colour Palate. The idea behind it is theming your food with colour, each course corresponds with a colour and relevant music, think mellow yellow for the yellow course. The downstairs room of Carousel has an industrial feel with white walls and stone floors which worked well as a blank canvas for the colour changes. The evening begins with a green theme; coloured lights flood the room and the first course, quail wrapped in a vine leaf served with […]

Ping Pong Summer Menu

The weather might have put its autumn coat on but forget the weather, summer is not over until at we’ve at least had the August Bank holiday and with that in mind The Handbook checked out Ping Pong’s summer menu. Start with one of the new summer mojitos before ordering, there’s hibiscus, blackberry and Chambord or Longan and Sake.  New dim sum includes the beef and black pepper shu mai (open-topped wonton pastry with asparagus, carrots, marinated beef, topped with fresh black pepper and goji berr) whilst lovers of seafood can indulge in the chinkiang seafood skewers, or the citrus […]

Ben’s Canteen Earlsfield: Review

Chances are if you live in Clapham that after a heavy night you’ve dragged your sorry hung over head to Ben’s Canteen on St John’s Hill for one of their infamous brunches, ordered eggs or a burger and a round of Bloody Marys. Have you been to Ben’s Canteen over in Earlsfield though? Having opened earlier this year, the sister site is larger than its counterpart but still with that simple, laid back charm that Ben’s Canteen is known for. Though both serve evening menus, I feel as if this is the one I would choose to dine in at […]

Caterina55 Review

Blink and you might miss Caterina55 amongst all the high rise glass towers in the Square Mile, a tentative sandwich board outside helps to guide in hungry bankers. Caterina55 offers authentic Italian food at a fast pace, with the emphasis really on fast food as reflected in the unwelcoming interior; this is not the place to head for a lazy lunch. Somewhere between a Pret and a canteen, Caterina55, has readymade sandwiches, baguettes and an assortment of mains, and beverages ready to go in chilled shelves where you then take your choice to the till to pay. You can also […]

El Pirata: Review

El Pirata in Mayfair cites itself as ‘informal, inexpensive and authentic Spanish tapas’ so in preparation for a trip to Barcelona later in the year we went down to check it out. When we arrived almost every inch of the front door was covered in stickers informing us that they had appeared in food guides, had won numerous awards and so on, rather impressive maybe but it rather cheapened the look of the place, I think the fact that they’ve survived 20 years in Mayfair, whilst other restaurants open and close before you’ve ordered your starter, is testament to the […]

Porky’s BBQ: Review

Following on from the success of their Camden branch, husband and wife team  Simon and Joy Brigg launched a second restaurant over on Bankside recently and so The Handbook team went down to check it out. Inside the restaurant is all exposed brick walls, high sturdy wooden tables and stools, twinkling lights, it’s stripped back but still welcoming and reflects the simple but well-honed menu. We chose however, to sit outside but unfortunately Porky’s is situated on a street which doesn’t seem to catch the sun, so whilst we could see people walking in the light by the river our […]
