There’s a new kid on the running block as Westin Hotels and Resorts has launched their January Rise & Run. A free, cheap and not too exhausting incentive to drag yourself away from Netflix, the experience will happen on the first Tuesday of every month on the banks of the River Thames. Running pro Charlie Watson seeks to shake you up ready to take on a Tuesday, with 5k runs accessible to all abilities, blended with activities such as mindfulness, yoga and insightful talks.

MY:METHOD offers yoga and pilates but with a twist. What’s the twist you ask? Well, they come to wherever you want them to, be it your office space, home or any other obscure location you can think up. We gave it a shot here at The Handbook, and on a Wednesday evening, as the rain pattered against the panes, a MY:METHOD yoga teacher came down to our unassuming office in Wandsworth. My colleague and I then indulged in an hour of power yoga with our cool, calm and totally zen yoga teacher organised by the group. MY:METHOD has 150 teachers in their catalogue operating across London, thus catering to men and women in all sorts of circumstances making yoga totally accessible to one and all. Helpful? Extremely! The inconvenience of travelling to classes combined with fitting exercise around already hectic schedules can make us shun off sporting-out! However MY:METHOD allows for enhanced motivation due to the intimacy of the classes, plus a definite ease what with them coming to you and not visa versa. One of the most attractive qualities about MY:METHOD is avoiding the awkwardness some do in larger class sizes. Now this is a clever idea; Resolution 21 has figured out that you need to repeat something 21 times to make a habit… (does that mean if we’ve watched 21 movies on Netflix we’re addicted?!). Anyway, with this in mind they’ve introduced the January initiative of completing 21 classes between the 2nd of January until the 28th of February – no catch, you just need to complete that amount of classes within the time frame and you can give yourself a big ol’ pat on the back. The classes range from cycle to HIIT to boxing and hot yoga and we’re all aboard! Are you up for the challenge?
Boom boom boom shake the room! There’s a new campaign afoot going by the name of #CutLoose, an initiative aiming to make workouts more centred around the way you feel, as opposed to how we think we’re suppose to look during exercise. This said, Boom Cycle are pedalling up to the mark with a brand new class, Boom Jungle, springing into our lives this January. Renowned for their noisy and moreish music beats, Boom Cycle puts the fun factor into fitness, seeing its cyclists of all stages jumping onto bikes and pedalling away to music. Boom Jungle promises to do just the same, instead filling the room with jungle-style beats as you complete a 45-minute wild ride with DJ Stefano Diemmi on the decks. Good vibes all round!

You’ll be splashing away those January blues with this one. AQUAPHYSICAL is just what it says on the box, a watery way to peel off the pounds, courtesy of FloatFit and Haymarket Hotel. Running for just two short but sweet days (15-17th of January), the experience at Hotel Café Royal will see techniques such as massage, energy healing and alternative therapies used to help banish stressors and realign with your inner self.
Yoga is the word on everyon’s lips at present, and what better month than January to get involved in the hype? Europe’s largest yoga company, Hotpod Yoga, has decided to celebrate the launch of their two brand spanking new London venues to wash away those Jan blues (and excess mince pie nibblings). The sexy purple cocoons of the Hotpod Yoga spaces invite their yogis to breathe deep, stretch further and sweat harder, with temperatures of 37 degrees blasting away your woes. The two new locations will open in Belgravia (26th of January), and Dulwich (19th of January), and as a result there will be an extended weekened of free classes. The classes will run in Dulwich on the 19th and 20th, and Belgravia from the 26th-28th, having you rolling out that mat in no time and get your downward dogs on!
