Marco Pierre White, also known as the man who trained Gordon Ramsay, the enfant terrible of London chefs and the first Brit to be awarded three Michelin stars, is returning to the West End for the first time in a decade.

White, who retired from being a professional chef in 1999, remains one the UK’s best known chefs and restauranteurs, with many successful ventures including London Steakhouse and Wheeler’s. His newest opening sees him back in the city with the steak and pizza restaurant Mr White’s, almost 35 years after his acclaimed first restaurant Harvey’s opened. Located in Leicester Square and set over three stories, it will also serve White’s own recently launched London Dry Gin.

Steaks are what White’s restaurants are perhaps best known for, with his popular Steakhouse Bar and Grill and New York Italian chains specialising in them. It’s unlikely, though, that these ones will be gold covered. Whilst the restaurant will have “British heritage at its heart”, it’ll also feature a carefully crafted Italian influence. The pizza menu has been curated by White, alongside Craig and Sarah Shelmerdin, founders of Log Fire Pizza Co.

The restaurant will be located next to the Odeon cinema in Leicester Square with capacity for 600 across 14,500 sq ft. Nick Taplin, chairman of White’s restaurant group Black and White Hospitality, billed it as an “evolution of taking tradition and quality ingredients and placing it in an easy to access, relatable and charismatic setting that been created purely for the guest who wishes to enjoy easy and affordable dining.” Expect the usual hallmarks of White’s cuisine in a spacious, luxurious setting.

White has been aiming for his restaurants to have “affordable glamour”, so what better place than in the heart of the West End? (and where many a film premiere has been held, no less). Whether White will be joining Paddington and Harry Potter as a metallic statue in the square remains to be seen.
