Everyone remembers the Roald Dahl book Matilda and its 1996 film adaptation: the beloved novel telling the story of a highly gifted girl with overcoming difficult obstacles at home and at school is a modern kid’s classic, and is now being adapted again by Netflix this year.

This new version is adapted from the also popular Tim Minchin musical, so unlike the 90s film that starred Mara Wilson, will have song and dance numbers.

While veteran actor Danny DeVito helmed the original film adaptation most of us remember- but this new one will be directed by Matthew Warchus, who also directed the original run of the stage show. Starring as Matilda herself is newcomer Alisha Weir in her film debut. Starring alongside her as Matilda’s parents are Peaky Blinders and The Irishman star Stephen Graham as Harry Wormwood and Andrea Riseborough as Zinnia Wormwood.

The real casting announcement that’s got people talking though is Emma Thompson, who’ll be starring as the infamous Miss Trunchbull, headmistress of Crunchem Hall Primary School (Matilda’s school) and the main antagonist of the story. An image of the legendary actress in costume as Trunchbull has been released by Netflix, and she’s certainly transformed from the beloved figure we all know into the villainous headmistress.

Also appearing in the new film is No Time To Die and Captain Marvel star Lashana Lynch, who’ll be stepping into the role of Matilda’s friend Miss Honey. Comedian Sindhu Vee meanwhile is playing Mrs. Phelps. An official trailer for the film has been released, where you can see the cast in in action- namely Emma Thompson’s Trunchbull. The musical is set to release in the UK in December, with a cinema release as well as coming to the streaming service at the same time.

Matthew Warchus said that the adaptation was a “imaginative and fresh retelling of the award-winning musical featuring talented young newcomers, alongside established ones… …I look forward to introducing this beloved and powerful story to a new generation of fans around the world.”

ROALD DAHL’S MATILDA THE MUSICAL will be released by Sony Pictures UK and TriStar Pictures across the U.K. and Ireland exclusively in cinemas on 2 December 2022. Netflix will release the film across the world [excluding the UK and Ireland] this Holiday Season.
