Autumn is officially here – albeit the confusing streak of balmy summer days last week said otherwise – and we’re ready (gulp) to swap out our summer wardrobe for light knits and layers. Our round-up of new season pieces promises to banish September blues and ensure a smooth transition into autumn, even if we are dragging our sandal-clad heels. Goodbye iced lattes and linen, hello cosy knits and cocoa. It’s time to invest in the new…

1. Lightweight Knitwear

Fine-knit cardigans are a year-round staple that will work hard in your wardrobe but make getting dressed easy. Buy in neutral tones and classic shapes for go-with-everything styling when the temperature drops. Reformation’s knitted cardi-bra is a great example of how to wear knitwear in the evening – just pair with jeans and strappy heels.

2. Leather trousers

An essential for any city girl, leather (and vegan leather) trousers are an alternative to jeans that go with everything. Pair with an oversized blazer and boots for the office or a chunky knit sweater and sneakers for Saturday brunch. Buy now and wear on rotation all season long.

3. Trench Coats

About as English as a cream tea, the trench coat is a sartorial staple (thanks Burberry) that will forever reign supreme. Traditionally beige, but available in an array of neutral tones, this ultimate outerwear icon will transition you from season to season seamlessly.

4. Chunky Ankle Boots

They were a favourite last Autumn/Winter and are stomping their way through to this season too. Love or loath, the chunky boot is the footwear of choice amongst the style set, seen on everyone from Rihanna to Rosie Huntington Whiteley. Heavy-duty soles are the flat boot’s cooler older sister whilst still boasting comfort and practicality come rain or snow. Put your best foot forward.
