If there’s one actress that’s on everyone’s lips at the moment, it’s Florence Pugh: the Oscar nominated star has quickly made a name for herself with her varied range and down-to-earth off screen persona, and now she’s starring in a new film that might see her get another nom.

The Wonder is an upcoming period drama film set in the 19th century, focusing on an 11 year old Irish girl, Anna, who begins to become something of a sensation in her town, attracting people from far and wide due to her claims that she hasn’t eaten for months, surviving instead through her connection with heaven.

Pugh plays a British nurse named Lib Wright who comes to visit Anna, having previously worked alongside Florence Nightingale, and to inspect the girl and her health. Meanwhile, journalist Will Byrne, played by Tom Burke (War and Peace, Mank) accompanies Lib to the Irish Midlands, skeptical and determined to find the truth about Anna’s supposed non eating.

The film is based on a book written by Emma Donoghue, who also penned 2010’s Room, which was later also turned into an Oscar winning film starring Brie Larson. Other cast members include acclaimed actor Toby Jones (Detectorists), Dermot Crowley (The Death of Stalin), Niamh Algar (The Virtues) and Elaine Cassidy (The Paradise). The film has been in production since last year, with filming taking place in the Irish countryside and Dublin.

The Wonder is helmed by Chilean director Sebastián Lelio, who previously directed the films Gloria (2013) and A Fantastic Woman (2018), the latter of which won the Oscar for Best Foreign Film. The film is set to arrive on our screens released by Netflix later this year, after a premiere at the Toronto and San Sebastián film festivals.
