The Return of One of Knightsbridge’s Most Beloved Hotels

Once the home of actress Lille Langtry and the place of Oscar Wilde’s arrest, Knightsbridge favourite, The Cadogan Hotel is set to reopen following its closure back in 2014. Returning at the end of the year as the Belmond Cadogan Hotel, it’ll feature 54 rooms and suites, a new restaurant by a celebrated chef and a spa and fitness suite. Rooms will pay heritage to the building’s past whilst staying bright, striking and luxurious.   We of course, have our eye on the Royal Suite.  Not only is it the largest suite, it also has the most interesting history, as it’s […]

Soho House Reopens Kettner’s Townhouse

2018 marks the return of an iconic London restaurant: Kettner’s Townhouse. One of the first restaurants to serve French food in London, the restaurant was opened in 1867 by a certain Monsieur Auguste Kettner, said to be chef to Napolean III. Of course, in its 150-year history, it’s welcomed some pretty famous faces, being popular with both historical figures and creatives such as Agatha Christie, Oscar Wilde, Bing Crosby, Margaret Thatcher and Winston Churchill. King Edward VII is even meant to have conducted his affair with actress Lillie Langtry there via a tunnel which ran from the restaurant to The […]

DND: The City’s New Speakeasy

Ziegfeld Follies: a series of Broadway and Vaudeville shows in early twentieth century New York. The follies were famous for their troupe of beautiful, slightly risque, chorus girls, known as Ziegfeld girls. Wearing elaborate costumes they “paraded up and down flights of stairs as anything from birds to battleships”. It’s this inspiration that the new bar, DND, hidden under the Vintry & Mercer hotel will take to bring the speakeasy style bar to life when it opens its doors in spring. With pictures of iconic Ziegfeld girls on the walls, the century-old images will look kindly on the retro glamour […]

The Pilgrm

The Pilgrm: Paddington’s New Hotel

Continuing the year of the hotel, this autumn will see the opening of The Pilgrm (yes, it is spelled that way, that’s not just us making a continuous mistake) a new hotel opening in Paddington’s Norfolk Square. The work of Jason Catifeoglou (myhotels group, IHG, The Zetter, Grain Store & The Zetter Townhouses), Andreas Thrasyvoulou (myhotels group) and Steph Thrasyvoulou, the 73-bedroom hotel is said to be a reinterpretation of the traditional hotel (could be why they chose the edgy spelling). You’ll check in online before you’ve arrived so you won’t find a reception desk, instead you’ll find a ground […]

Churchill’s Old War Office Becomes a Hotel

Here at The Handbook HQ, we’re planning ahead, if you want to too then is this one for your 2020 diaries. If The Ned was the most exciting opening of 2017 (so far, we never know what else this city might produce this year) then this is going to be the most exciting opening of 2020, because Raffles Hotels & Resorts have announced that they are opening their first UK hotel and they’ve teamed up with the Hinduja Group and Obrascon Huarte Lain Desarrollos (OHLD). Following in the footsteps of The Ned, they will be transforming one of London’s iconic […]

A-Listers’ Favourite NYC Hotel Opens in Shoreditch

2017, it’s the year of the hotel. Our city is already marked out and defined by iconic hotels, but now the new kids on the block are arriving en masse. Already this year we’ve had the second London Four Seasons at Ten Trinity Square, Henrietta, The Ned and we’re awaiting the arrival of Nobu Shoreditch.  Stiff competition then for Michael Achenbaum, the New York hotelier, who this week will be opening The Curtain, his first European hotel. He doesn’t seem fazed though, he’s already got the backing of his celebrity fans, who all stay at Hotel Gansevoort, which he opened […]

The Ned: 2017’s Biggest Opening

What happens when London-based Soho House & Co and New York’s Sydell Group join forces? The Ned. The Ned is what happens and it’s going to be big. Not just big but humungous. Anywhere that is going to house nine restaurants, 252 bedrooms, a club, rooftop pool, gym, spa, hamam and late night bar needs to be rather roomy, which is why it’ll be opening in the iconic former Midland Bank building – designed by Sir Edwin ‘Ned’ Lutyens in 1924. If you’re a member, then you’ll want to head to the roof as Ned’s Club Upstairs will give you […]
