Once a ‘family run strip club’ (mind boggles), the White Horse in Shoreditch has now gone and been replaced by Smoking Goat, a second venue for the Soho Thai barbeque bar. Ben Chapman, Brian Hannon and Head Chef Ali Borer will bring their expertise from Soho to bear in this exciting new venture in the heart of Shoreditch.
Redesigning the interior to both draw on the original features of the concrete 1930s building and evoke the atmosphere one of Bangkok’s late night canteen spots, Smoking Goat has been carefully designed by Champan and guided by project manager Colin Harding and specialist woodworker Dan Preston.
But its the authentic flavours of Thailand that will make you want to come back to Smoking Goat. The kitchen, led by Borer, will be dominated by carefully-sourced ingredients, like the Thai herbs and vegatables which are grown in Cornwall and Dorset, and Cornish seafood. The menu itself will be Thai.
With the cooking taking place above charcoal pots and smokers Smoking Goat’s in-house butcher, Roberto, will be bringing along whole Tamworth pigs, goats and game. The food will be predominantly ‘Aharn Glam Lao’, which tranlates as ‘drinking food’ and includes steamed oysters with burnt chilli and fermented shrimp, or definiltey give herbal blood sausage a go, not to mention the stir-fried freens with salt ish and spicy offal laabs. Larger dishes will include soya braised chickens from Bangkok’s Chinatown, a Northern Thai turmeric version of Massaman Smoking Goat, smoked point end brisket and Garlic chive hand made bouncy egg noodles.
This place sounds like it’s going to be smoking hot when it opens its doors tomorrow as it recreates the Bangkok experience. Definiltey beats the strip club.
Smoking Goat: Opens on Friday 27th October, 64 Shoreditch High Street, Shoreditch, E1 6JJ, www.smokinggoatbar.com
