If you were having a cocktail party in the 1930s and didn’t want to have to put in the work, then you could pay Fortnum & Mason to throw the party for you in your own house. Handy.
And the cost for that was just three shillings and sixpence, or in today’s terms £11 (don’t worry that didn’t include alcohol, otherwise we really are getting a rough deal now) which is the same price as Fortnum’s iconic cocktails. Whilst you can’t get Fortnum’s to throw a party for you, for 3’6 you can visit their new bar: 3 and 6. It just so happens it is on the 3rd floor of the Gentlemen’s department, not too far from where you used to order your cocktail parties. See how it’s all coming together?
An intimate bar with a relaxed feel, they’ll be serving classic cocktails; think Martinis, Americanos, Negronis and Manhattans as well as whisky, tequila and wine. To eat will be the likes of Welsh rarebit, steak tartare, potted rabbit, quinoa and pomegranate salad with aubergine rolls and treacle tart.
