Absurd Bird: Adventurous Chicken

By Emily Gray | 25th February 2016

From gourmet restaurants to finishing a night out with a bucket of the fried stuff  it can’t be denied that London loves its chicken. And that’s before mentioning we all know someone who ended up that show The Fried Chicken Shop, don’t we?

Well next month joining the scene is a new chicken restaurant, Absurd Bird, but rather than serving greasy laden meals it will be serving up gourmet Southern US inspired dishes. It’ll open first in Spitalfields before a second restaurant in Soho and later openings throughout the UK later – they’re certainly going to be busy.

They’ll be using slow growing breeds such as Cotswold White and Cotswold Gold, which are reared for 20% longer than other organic birds, are traditionally free range and are additive and hormone free. They’ll be used in dishes such as whole spatch-cocked smoked chicken and crispy, fried chicken marinated overnight in buttermilk and served on waffles.

Other dishes will feature jalapeno cheese biscuits, hurricane popcorn, corn bread pudding and sweet potato marshmallow bake, orange honey coleslaw, crack pie and dipsy cake – you can see where the absurd part of the name comes from, it’s definitely more adventurous than just chicken and chips.

Downstairs you’ll find an underground bar serving up Southern inspired drinks created with Soul Shakers, expect to find the likes of expertly crafted moonshine and soulful cocktails. The interior created by LSM Design reflects the playfulness of the menu, modern but nostalgic, modest but still innovative.

Absurd Bird: Opens 14th March, 54 Commercial Street, E1 6LT
