August Openings

By | 30th July 2014

August is always a strange time in London as everyone flocks to the nearest beach, airport or back into the countryside to escape the heat. For those of us left behind though, it means we get to make the most of the bars and restaurants opening in August before everyone gets back and an 8pm reservation on a Friday night is like gold dust. So from a speak easy in London Bridge to a raw food restaurant in Chelsea here are London’s latest openings:

The Butcher’s Hook

Live in Fulham? Then you’re bound to know The Butcher’s Hook, run by Gus Evans who formerly use to run the likes of the Big Easy on the Kings Road and now he is opening a second pub over in Ravenscourt Park. With John Stanyer in the kitchen (he’s previously cooked at Daphne’s, Launceston Place and The Albion) they’ll be serving up a classic British menu think squid and blood orange salad with crispy kale and nostalgic Bakewell tart for pudding.  There’ll also be a garden so you can make the most of the last of the summer. Opens 11th August

Tom’s Kitchen Restaurant and Bar

Tom Aiken’s is adding restaurant number 5 to his collection this summer with the opening of Tom’s Kitchen Restaurant and Bar in St Katharine’s Dock. The 130 seater restaurant will continue to focus on using British produce (the walls are adorned with canvases featuring the suppliers) and you’ll find some of the classic Tom’s Kitchen dishes on the menu such as spicy crab cakes and seven hour confit lamb, as well as new dishes including haddock with sweet corn fritters. Next door will be a deli selling the best things in life, for us it's the flourless chocolate fudge cake – see you in the queue. Opens 18th August

The Shrub and Shutter

Brixton, Coldharbour Lane in fact, is getting a fancy new cocktail bar this month, Shrub and Shutter. With innovative cocktails and a weekly changing seasonal menu, it’s brought to you by Chris Edwards and Dave Trengenza who have worked at Adam St private members club, the Baltic and Northbank restaurant so you know you’re in good hands! Opens August  336 Cold Harbour Lane, Brixton, London SW9 8QH

Tanya's Cafe

Tanya Alekseeva or Raw Tanya as she is known, is one of the leading detox and raw food experts and now she is opening a raw food café in MyHotel Chelsea. And it’s healthy, super healthy,  open for breakfast, lunch and serving small plates in the evening, drinks include Matcha latte and medicinal mushrooms; whilst for lunch forget your usual lasagne they’ll be serving up a walnut meat, pesto, marinara, cheese and courgette pasta version. There’s even a chocolate section on the pudding menu which you don’t have to feel guilty about! Opens August

The Breakfast Club and Call Me Mr Lucky

Brought to you by the gang behind Mayor of Scaredy Cat Town and King of Ladies Man, Call Me Mr Lucky is a new speakeasy opening this month and if you’re a bit of a tequila aficionado then you’re going to love it as tequila is high on the menu. It isn’t just opening anywhere though, oh no, it will be in the basement of the new Breakfast Club (the fifth venue) which is opening in London Bridge. So we’re thinking you line your stomach with their infamous brunches before heading on downstairs later for tequila. Perfect. Opens mid August

Having opened Sager and Wilde over in Hackney, Michael and Charlotte Sager-Wilde are back with their second venue, wine bar Mission. They’ll be setting up shop in Bethnal Green under the railway arches and will be focusing on Californian wines and American cocktails, food-wise expect to find Californian cooking with Italian inspiration. With a mezzanine, outside terrace and private dining room this sure is a heck of a wine bar. Opens end of August 250 Paradise Row, London, E2 9LE
