Whilst the definition of ‘aviary’ is a large cage or enclosure for keeping birds in, we’re thinking the link to feathered creatures at this new rooftop bar is the sweeping birds eye views you get of the city below. Taking over the tenth floor of the brand new Montcalm Royal London House Hotel, Aviary is a new drinking destination aimed at city workers, nestled in between Old Street and Liverpool Street.
Russell Sage Studio (Bounce Old Street, Dishoom, Social Eating House) is behind the interiors, creating an eye-catching mix of rich purples, gold, orange and green with a central bar clad in ornate gold shelving the main feature of the indoor restaurant and bar area. The whole look has hints of mid-century styling, brought together in a contemporary way. Seating invites guests to linger, making it the perfect bridge between business lunch and post-work drinks.
Come the summer months, the sweeping floor to ceiling windows will flood the main room with sunlight, but it’s the roof terrace that will steal the show. A large marble bar will serve botanically-inspired cocktails in quirky glasses; think copper pineapples containing sharing cocktails, with drinks such as The Bee & The Frog (Louis Royer, apricot brandy, lemon, honey and tonic) and High Heel Society (Sipsmith gin, Joseph Perrier Champagne, cucumber and honey) made with honey sourced from local markets. Large sofas will create more intimate areas for groups, with bright green and navy blue all-weather furniture dotted with palm print cushions, not to mention views of the Gherkin, Shard and Walkie Talkie beyond.
It’s not all about the drinks though; the 150-cover indoor area will serve an exotic menu of raw plates, British meat from the 550°C cast iron Bertha coal oven and indulgent sides. A big focus is on the heritage of the meat, all sourced from small farms in the UK including Longhorn cows from the Lake District. Think Kombu marinated pork with brown shrimp cocktail; beef tartare with oyster dressing and a daily changing ‘butchers cut’. Steaks will take up a large part of the menu; Ayrshire rose veal T-bone (950g), Old Spot double chop (900g) and Shorthorn chateaubriand (500g) with your choice of sauce; truffled gravy, Hodson’s (Béarnaise with a hint of Marmite) and seaweed butter for fish.
Quirky cocktails, meat cooked to perfection and unbeatable views – the crowds will come flocking.
