It’s been 30 years since the Balans Soho Society opened on Old Compton Street and to celebrate, they are have headed south and opened their first site on the other side of the river, over in Clapham.
They’ll be doing what Balans does best, serving up morale boosting cocktails and encouraging us to indulge in our decadent side. Cocktails include the likes of Slap on the Rum made from Red Leg spiced rum, pineapple, mint and ginger beer and the Jaliscan Night – a mix of El Jimador tequila, activated charcoal, agave and violet. To accompany it will hearty brunches of French toast, pancakes, eggs benedict, eggs in hell (poor eggs), kedgeree and the infamous Balans burger. Suppers include goats cheese and basil gnocchi with roast artichokes, peas, feves and pinenuts; lamb rump with merquez, green tahini, apricot, couscous, harissa carrots and sumac yoghurt and pan-fried hake with squash tortellini, roast artichokes and beurre noisette.
Simon Costin, who has brought the creativity of art installation to editorial and fashion shows worldwide oversees the interior. Having worked with the likes of Alexander McQueen, Hermes, Stella McCartney and Faberge, it’s both vibrant and a little bit extraordinary.
If you needed any more reason to visit then they have the Absinthe fountain ritual, which has weekend written all over it.
