We could all do with a dose of LA sunshine in our lives reckons Bel-Air founder Andrew Bredon and that’s just what he aims to do with his new eatery with its Beverly Hills chic yellow and white striped awning, windowed frontage, timber-lined walls and carrera marble counter.
The menu, developed by Damian Currie (Lardo, Zucca and St John), takes its inspiration from California with its light, healthy, dishes low in salt and carbs and free of refined sugar. Start the day with breakfast shots – including the ‘Fresh Prince’ made with fennel, mint, cucumber and ginger or‘Build your own Breakfast’ with buckwheat porridge, homemade pineapple and coconut granola, or jumbo rolled oats topped with homemade coconut yoghurt, almond milk or Greek yoghurt to which you can add compotes, super-food powders such as spirulina, maca, and baobab, agave syrup, nuts, chia seeds, toasted coconut and cacao nibs.
Open breakfast sandwiches feature San Francisco style sourdough or wheat-free caraway and chia seed black bread topped with avocado, radish and raw beetroot mixed with cumin, sumac and fresh lemon juice. Further options include three types of free-range breakfast eggs; Healthy Hangover Hash with chorizo, grated courgette, smoked paprika and Shakshuka and Muscle Beach – a minute steak served with a poached egg and smoky spinach and sweet potato hash.
Lunch is all about ‘Hot Stuff’ with Crab cakes packed with fresh ginger, chilli and coriander with shaved crunchy pak choi and pickled daikon salad or mix and match salad boxes such as Broccoli and almond slaw, raw root vegetable with apple vinegar and green herbs. You can up your game with protein – poached salmon, chicken breast, root vegetable frittata or peppered smoked mackerel and during the winter months there are warming soups such as an Asian broth with shredded ginger chicken.
Drink Cocoface coconut water, cold-pressed juices – including Bel-Air’s own rosemary infused cold-pressed orange juice spritzer, coffee from local micro-roaster, Ozone and Japanese Matcha tea. Oh yes and if you fancy some queue-busting LA tech with your tea you can order take out with an iBeacon app which automatically recognises you as you arrive.
