Reclaimed wood panelling, exposed brickwork, pendant lighting, rustic copper and brass fixtures – it’s the Manhattan East Village bar starter pack. Put into use by David Layton and his team at Brick & Liquor – it’s clearly popular because their Tooting Broadway bar which opened last October will be getting a sibling site as this Saturday they open their second site in Clapham.
Running with the neighbourhood bar vibe, they’re all about great cocktails, food to graze on whilst drinking and exceptional hospitality; it’s informal and fun but you still get table service. At the double tiered bar – the mixologists will take to their stage to create the signature serves such as the salted caramel espresso martini and new creations like the Nine + a Half Weeks. Made from Havana 3 rum, orange curacao, white vermouth and orange bitters it’s then aged for nine and a half weeks in a merlot and IPA conditioned oak case – that’s some dedication to a cocktail.
Described as ‘social eats’ the menu is divided into small and large plates and it’s all the sort of stuff that you can graze on whilst drinking without having to stop the cocktails. Always either £6 or £9 the dishes include hand crumbed risotto croquettes with gooey mozzarella, chorizo and white truffle mayonnaise. At the weekend, they’ll be serving plenty of prosecco cocktails and Bloody Marys alongside dishes such as The Great British Pancake – a hybrid of pancakes and the Full English, which sounds like a hangover dream.
