When it comes to cakes and American food, Bea Vo is a bit of a pro. She was the founder of Bea’s of Bloomsbury and is founder and executive chef of Stax, Boondocks and The Famous Flames and now she is about to open a new bakery, Butterscotch, in Old Street Station.
It’s all about American home cooking, so, along with brownies, cupcakes and marshmallows, Bea will be cooking pies, cobblers, breads and muffins, with gluten free, vegan and vegetarian options too. Cupcakes include peanut butter Reese’s peanut butter cup; pistachio vanilla and chocolate fudge. Brownies aren’t just your usual chocolate and nut variety, nope, we’re talking sea salted caramel brownies; chocolate brownies with peanut butter fudge and a milk chocolate glaze; vanilla cheesecake brownies topped with butterscotch sauce and blondies. And if you just want a slice of cake there is the Kinder Bueno cake.
There’ll also be limited edition, monthly changing cupcakes. This month there is a fresh elderflower, strawberry and mascarpone cream cupcake and July is all about Butterscotch’s take on Pimms; a cake made from fresh mint, strawberry, orange peel and Pimms syrup.
The newly opened pop-up is going to give you an all-American flavour of what’s to come when Butterscotch opens permanently in the former BBC headquarters in White City this autumn. Open from 8am until 7pm during the week you’ll be able to pick up a box of cakes on your way to work to banish the Monday blues or when you’re rushing to your friend’s birthday and realise that you’ve forgotten their present…
