London-born Ibiza party scenster Andrew Dax, Italian party co-ordinator Corrado Mozzillo, and Argentinian curator Augusto Rossillo have been brought together by entertainment entrepreneur Nick House to create brand new club Latino-Pacific club and lounge bar concept Chakana.
The name means ‘tree of life’ and the venue itself is reminiscent of an ancient Incan temple filled with mystic treasures – think intricate carvings of the snake serpent, puma and condor sitting alongside depictions of the Chakana itself and a display of skulls lit eerily from within like a celebration of ancestral spirits.
The décor is all rich golds, reds and oranges with winding tree roots seemingly growing from the ceiling, snakeskin banquettes, deep couches, old stools made from salvaged drums, heavy wooden tables, chests and packing trunks. Light is cast by flickering candles in giant candelabras, dripping wax onto the deep-set stone floors.
Entertainment is inspired by Tarantino’s cult classic 1996 movie ‘From Dusk till Dawn’ and theatrical drinks – or knowledge revealing potions – take centre stage. We’re talking piscos, rare tequilas and dark rums. Try the Peruvian flake, which muddles Coca leaves infused Pisco, lime and demera sugar and comes served in a jaguar head. Or perhaps the Amazonian Bliss – pisco shaken with overproof rum, pear liqueur, lemon juice and aloe vera syrup.
But don’t worry, they also feature the super foods of the Andes: chia seeds, maca root, Inca berries and coca leaves which might even go some way to counteracting the ravages of the booze… The obligatory sharing drink comes in the shape of a huge Machu Picchu statue with ‘tree of life’ shot glasses balanced on its branches.
